UPDATED: Wayne Hills Football Star Arrested Again

Andrew Monaghan, one of nine football players charged with assault after they allegedly attacked two Wayne Valley students after a party last October, now faces disorderly conduct charge.

Andrew Monaghan, one of the nine Wayne Hills football players charged with aggravated assault stemming from an incident at a party last October, has been arrested again, Wayne Police Chief John Reardon said.

Monaghan was charged with disorderly conduct at a party on Salisbury Road last Friday night, Reardon said.

Monaghan interfered with a police officer who was investigating a noise complaint at the party, Reardon said.

An officer was trying to interview an individual at the residence when Monaghan allegedly encouraged the person to not give the officer his name and urged him to shut the door on the officer, Reardon said. Monaghan was warned three times to stop and was arrested after the third time, Reardon said. He was released on a summons.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of 30 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Monaghan, 18, the only adult at the time the charges were filed, entered pre-trial intervention, a probationary-like program, earlier this year that granted him special probation in the case against him.

Reardon said the incident has nothing to do with any previous incident Monaghan was invovled in. He said he wasn't sure if the matter would have any affect on Monaghan's pre-trial intervention.

The nine players were charged after police said they beat up two Wayne Valley High School students after Halloween party in October 2011.

Seven of the players pleaded guilty to simple assault and were sentenced to probation earlier this year.

The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office dismissed the charges against then-team captain Troy Zaffino earlier this year. Zaffino graduated Hills in June.

The players were allowed to participate in the team’s first two state playoff games last season. The Board of Education banned the players from participating in the state championship game, and all extracurricuar activities, for the rest of last school year. An administrative law judge upheld the suspensions a few days later, after the players applied for emergent relief to have the ban lifted.

Hills defeated Old Tappan 15-12 on a late touchdown to win the state championship in early December.

The incident generated a firestorm of controversy for the school district, the team, and its coach, Chris Olsen.

Residents in town were often divided on how they thought Olsen, who was also the Wayne Hills’ athletic director when the incident occurred, and district officials handled the situation.

The incident prompted administrators to adopt a new policy that prohibits athletic directors and other administrators from coaching sports teams. However, the board chose not to renew Olsen’s contract as athletic director. Olsen will return to coach the team, and his son Kevin, a nationally-acclaimed quarterback, next season.

I am sure it is only a matter of time until his very proud parents come out and blame someone else. They will claim it was not him, or blame it on the cops. Anyone but their own son. He could/would never do anything wrong. It is a shame that someone like this has to give a great school and great football program a black eye.

Yes, let's hear about his excuse the 3rd time around. What a fine example for our Wayne youth. Sorry, but the more I read the FB and Twitter posts from some of these types of Wayne kids (regardless of where in Wayne) the more I worry. Some of them are headed in the same direction as this loser. And the parents aren't helping. I know a mom who buys booze for her 16 yr old daughter to drink with her friends (and the dad is a lawyer no less). Very sad society.

Not having children in school, I assumed this man was a high school senior. Was he in trouble while attending Wayne Hills HS? When did he graduate? What was the reason for reporting this now and making the connection to the high school, Wayne Patch?
LET'S CHANGE THE SUBJECT: How about the deplorable condition of Wayne Township roads. Valley Road extension was built in 1975. It has not been repaved since it was built. Why aren't ALL of us complaining to the mayor and town council. Hey, Wayne Patch, why not do a story about our disintegrating roads. The Township says, call the County. LOL. As homeowner of Wayne Township for more than 25 years, I think it is about time that Wayne Township moves forward with a law suit or some other means to get our roads to a point where we can drive on them and not feel like we're driving in a war zone. Even when Passaic County paved Alps Road, they didn't bother to level the man hole covers to meet the new road bed. So riding on Alps Road has become an obstacle course to see how many many man hole covers can be avoided. Wayne Township pays a king's ransom in taxes to Passaic County who in turn uses our taxes to line the freeloader's pockets or those of special interest groups.

"Guys, at what point do the headlines stop with Wayne Hills Football Payer? When they are 40! Longer??? ...

The only reason its a headline is because its a continuation of the original story about this idiot's actions. Makes logical sense from a journalistic point of view and provides a background for the first time reader. No one in Wayne wants to keep rehashing what all the idiots did that day last year, but it's a notable incident and if this jerk didn't keep getting into trouble we wouldn't have to keep hearing about it

Of course we don't know what happened before because he was a minor. He is not being persecuted, he is getting caught. The police weren't at the address because they were out to get him. They were there to investigate a complaint. He chose to be rude and disrespectful. Nobody made him do it. Bottom line he's a smart ass. Unfortunately too many kids are raised as smart ass's in this town. They don't respect ANY authority, not teachers, not police, not anyone. I found this quite clear when chaperoning at different school functions over the years. This ADULT was full of himself when he played PAL ball as a kid (I won't say what I thought of his father). I was not surprised when he was ring leader of the Valley vs Hills issue and this just proves he didn't deserve a break. I hope this interferes with any deal he made to get out of that jam. And to the person above complaining that it's another Hills/Valley thing -probably goes or went to Hills. Arghhhhh

There is no criminality involved, there is just that little technicality there. Telling someone to lose the door is not criminal. You do not need to answer a police officer if you choose not to. Those actions taken alone are not violations of law. A noise complaint is all it was. Oh, yeah now we need to put down the torches and pitchforks and let the system process. But really , had some cooler heads prevailed would this situation have resulted.

WayneResident

9:37 am on Thursday, July 19, 2012

Actually Scondo, it is a misdemeanor for interfering with the duty of a police officer...assumking it was solely a verbal interference as the article states. The duty of the police officer was to investigate the noise disturbance. Part of that duty is to ascertain the name of the person who opened the door and attempt to find out where the adult(s) who own the home are or were. Mr Monaghan chose to stick his nose where it didnt belong and thus interfered with the duty of the investigating police officer. And Mr Scondo - any time a police officer asks you to identify yourself in the course of investgating a call or a complaint, you must. If you choose not to, the officer can very well take you in.

Read the part where I say:Those actions taken alone are not violations of law

N.J.S.A. 2C:29-1 restricts the specific types of conduct that can be used to try to prevent a public official from performing an official function. This law prohibits specific conduct to obstruct, impair or prevent the administration of law including: (1) flight; (2) intimidation; (3) force; (4) violence; (5) physical interference; (6) obstacle; and (7) other unlawful act.
It is important to emphasize that words alone are not enough to prevent or attempt the law performance of a governmental function by a public official (Police Officer.) Nonetheless, abusive words that are combined with physically threatening actions can constitute adequate evidence to support an attempted prevention
N.J.S.A. 2C:29 1. Obstructing administration of law or other governmental function
a. A person commits an offense if he purposely obstructs, impairs or perverts the administration of law or other governmental function or prevents or attempts to prevent a public servant from lawfully performing an official function by means of flight, intimidation, force, violence, or physical interference or obstacle, or by means of any independently unlawful act. This section does not apply to failure to perform a legal duty other than an official duty, or any other means of avoiding compliance with law without affirmative interference with governmental functions.

Scondo

10:05 am on Thursday, July 19, 2012

So , I think we can all now see that mere words does not constitute sufficient basis for the charge. Oh, well, that is the law, we have to live with it. Again, being a jerk, a smartass, a smart mouth , smart alec are not criminal in and of itself. Neither is being annoying, being a spoiled brat, being lazy, stupid and arrogant. But sometimes being those things is suffiicient punishment in and of itself, which I suspect he will find if he does not work on improvement of his personal relationship skills.

Not a parent of a high schooler and I am not defending this persons actions. However, cast the first stone...ect... Take football and Olsen out of it - this boy (adult yet still a boy) has made mistakes and he should have repurcusions. However, all theses posts read like you have pitchforks and torches in your hands....hate much? One person is not a team or program. Teens in general want to flex their "muscle", get mouthy sometimes and make mistakes - thats how most learn and grow into fine adults. To me the key here is parents and sports culture. Not to oversimplify but it is not our place to judge him, the Hills program or Hills Coach. Instead focus on the children as individuals. Part of the problem with sports is the conflict with family life and religion. Practice, camps, training and games comes first. Good values come from time with family and friends in a loving and nuturing environment. Also regular religious atendance provides a moral foundation which presents many opportunties for good v evil, ethical and empathy lessons. It's not just about this one boy or football is about a premium placed on sports and its players that are treated in such a regard they feel they are above the law and better than others.

Both of my boys know Andrew M. when I mentioned to them that Andrew has gotten in trouble again, this was their response: "He's such an idiot" and my other son: Mom, Andrew is such a "scum bag". I have to say my boys aren't perfect but they do watch their language in front of me, so for my son to use that kind of language to my face, it makes me wonder what kind of young man Andrew is becoming?

Anything this kid did/does s going to be magnified. He needs to learn to be a choir boy, and someone needs to give him some good counsel.
1. He was involved in the Wayne Hills football players incident (result: PTI)
2. The day after the board suspended the former interim superintendent's decision to suspend the players from the first playoff game, this kid is involved in an airhorn incident at a pep rally.
3. And now, this latest incident.

I don't know what his plans are (college, I assume), but the best thing for this kid to do now is to be a doormouse and go away to school. And, hopefully, learn to avoid situations in the future. He is probably getting more heat than he deserves, but he deserves at least some of it. He needs to learn to avoid this stuff, and not become a pariah.

Steroids cause sudden mood swings. One minute you can be happy and then the next you'll be upset without even knowing why.

Steroids cause severe anger, which can result in violence or even death. This anger is better known as "roid rage."

This first incident completely blew up and destroyed this CHILDS CAREER. so I'm going with he is very bitter. 10 years ago I myself have seen kids at parties yel at cops and never ever get arrested. This is all bullshit. This kid has not been caught doing drugs or killing someone. He is a young child that yes maybe is a wise ass but to be called a loser and put in jail is a complete joke. Many kids today are doing much worse then what he has done. Maybe everyone should look into the other problems in schools rather then linch this child for yelling at a cop.

Anthony - you obviously know very little about steroids.( or how to spell lynch) .
Steroids Do Not Have to Make a Person Bigger. Too many people continue to say that they wouldn’t use steroids – or don’t think certain players use – because they don’t want/have big muscles. There are a whole host of steroids that – when used properly – do not result in “getting big.” Using Rafael Palmeiro as an example, the allegations are that he used a drug called “Stanozolol,” also known as “Winstrol.” Winstrol is a drug that - in the vernacular - people use for “cutting,” or “getting ripped,” which gives the user a lean but muscular appearance with little water retention.

The strength gains from using this drug are less than from using some of the more potent androgens, but would be extremely beneficial with the added benefit of not adding size. Getting too big could attract all kinds of unwanted attention

The fact that all you have no lives and comment and judge other people is just arrogant and wrong. You 40+ year old losers are judging an 18 year old.. you must feel well accomplished and proud of your self for leaving a negative comment. Monaghan is pleading not guilty and is not to blame for an angry cop when he was only trying to help out his buddy know his rights. The cop had no right to enter the property without probable cause or a warrant and the cop was trying to enter anyways. Why dont you take your comments to the story of the guy whose robbing houses or fraud charges instead of a kid who gets charged with disorderly conduct. A PETTY LITTLE CHARGE!
