Eileen Albanese needs to be on the board of Ed. After being at the canidates forum last night it became very clear that Eileen understands what needs to be done to make the education in Wayne great again. She nailed every question asked and truly showed she has a true grasp of what goes on in our schools and what is working and what is not. She truly cares deeply about our education here in Wayne and especially our children. She also said that she is an independent thinker and will make her votes with " is this what is best for our school children here in Wayne
"?? I so hope Wayne votes her on to the board of Ed. We need her voice.

Interesting, most of Cathy Kazan's accolades are PTO related but I understand she quit the Council PTO and Project Graduation mid-year in a huff and left the organization hanging. We do not need drama on the Board of Education again.

I agree with you Lipkin, Cathy Kazan did a great job last night. In my opinion, she did the best job of all the candidates. So, I would be scared if I was on the other team and so begins the smear campaign. The fact is it was Mrs. Kazan stepped aside to chair other committees as it was her son's senior year and wanted to take part in those activities ie..Project Graduation. She DID NOT leave the Pto in a huff, in fact she trained her replacement and made herself available to the VP and Treasurer anytime. Anyone who has every worked with Cathy on the Pto knows what a stand up person she is and does not cause drama. Not once during her campaign has she bad mouthed any of her opponents anywhere. I cannot say the same thing for opponents. I don't get where you heard only PTO accolades, I heard a wealth of experience. I for one will be casting my vote for Cathy and will and have been encouraging everyone I know to do so.

Cathrine Kazan's poise, wit and energy exceeded my expectations.

I am casting one of my votes in favor of the very capable Cathrine Kazan!

I would like to know which candidates are willing to be independent thinkers and prevent Superintendent Gonzalez from steamrolling his way over the Board as he has been doing since he took the postion. I think the Wayne School System had been in a downward spiral under his "leadership" (which seems to be more of a dictatorship).

@Kel
This is a good superintendent. People like you do nothing but try to run good people out of town. The Board put the keys to the car in his hands. He may not be perfect, he may ding the car a bit along the way, but this is the guy who is going to lead our district and get us to be better than we have been.

First of all, you don't know me so don't judge mw and say I am trying to "run good people out of this town". I just choose not to blindy believe "This is a good superintendent". I don't see that at all. Why do you think he is a good superintendent?

He wants to streamline the policies at the schools (ie. make things the same at Valley and Hills) which sounds great. However, as an example, his response to Wayne Valley having Minds in Motions awards and Wayne Hills not having Minds in Motion awards was to ELIMINATE the awards at Valley, NOT add them to Hills. It wasn't until his office was bombarded with complaints, that he backpedaled. Why would you even think to ELIMINATE a program that actually honors the student/athletes in our community? With all the bad publicity many of the athletes have given this town, wouldn't it be nice to celebrate the athletes who have 4.0 grade averages during their varsity seasons?

And, why didn't he choose Diane Pandolfi as his assistant superintendent? You have a woman who knows Wayne's school system intricately and had so much to offer in terms of knowledge and experience. She was principal at Lafayette, opened Fallon, opened Anthony Wayne and would have been an awesome assistant superintendent (or even superintendent, truth be told)! But instead, she is doing some administrative job that I am sure she is excelling at but definitely does not take advantage of her talents.

What he did to the Athletic Director positions is also a disgrace. We don't need 1 Athletic Director overseeing 2 assistants at each high school. What is this new Athletic Director actually doing up on Nellis Drive as an administrator instead of being in the schools every single day?

And then what about changing the 9 period day at the high schools to an 8 period day? That has not been implemented (yet).....but that would be doing a complete disservice to the kids. They are required by law to take so many classes, that they need the 9 period day so that they can explore electives and hopefully figure out what they want to do in life. You eliminate a period, you eliminate an elective, plain and simple. Why would this even be considered? Look into A/B scheduling or block scheduling or something else..but definitely do not eliminate a period.

These are just 4 examples of many. And I feel like there is no checks and balances with the current Board of Education. Where were they when some of these decisions were being made? Why does it seem like the BOE has never said "no" to Superintendent Gonzalez?

I am not sure yet. I am waiting for a rebroadcast of the forum so I can watch it in it's entirety. I was at a meeting at the high school last night and forgot to DVR it. Eileen Albanese mentioned being an "independent thinker" in her opening statement which made me start to think that I would value that in a candidate more than any of the "experience" the candidates were mentioning.

Kel rewatch the forum and then make your choice. To me one person was clearly the one who is in this for " our children". As for Big Bird I know who you are not voting for : ) For all remember the board of Ed has to work as a board. when you vote you have to think who has the ability to get the board to look at things the "correct way" which is, how will this affect our children. We all want the best education for our children!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think you give them too much credit. No one said anything particularly impressive. They all said the "right" things. All used the same buzz words. We learned nothing from the debate last night.

Last night was about as useful as watching the Romney/Obama debate.

I watched and I thought that Eileen Albanese was the most impressive. I'm definitely voting for her. I'll give Kim Essen my vote as well but I can't pick a 3rd so far. A lot of you here seem to like Cathy Kazan but I couldn't get past something in her tone. She struck me as a bit condescending and took a few shots at the current board. A newcomer has to work with these people so I agree with the person who stated before that we don't need any more drama on the Board.

Potter you are correct. We have all seen what happens when board of Ed doesn't work as a team. I am by no means saying all has to agree but there is a way to not agree and to let the board know why you don't agree. It takes a special person to vote on what they feel is the correct vote and to let the others know why they feel that way.

I'm with Kel and the independent thinkers. I do not see how hiring an Assistant Superintendent improves our children's education, it just takes money away from them and their teachers and puts a layer between the superintendent and the schools. Hiring a PR firm for communication means that whatever the superintendent says is being vetted by a PR firm first and that is more money that is not going towards our children's education.

As someone who has known the Kazan family for a few years and a recent graduate of Wayne Valley I can proudly say I will be casting my vote this November for Cathy Kazan. She's an Independent thinker who has the experience and vision to serve our township well on the BOE. She cares for the children of Wayne and as someone who was in High School while she ran the PTO I can personally say she did a fantastic job. I hope everyone else will doing as I do and cast their vote for Cathy Kazan this November 6.

Cathy Kazan is an excellent candidate. She is intelligent, poised and passionate about education. She is all about the kids. She certainly has my vote. She has no agenda for a higher office and has promised to fulfill her term if elected. You certainly didn't see that with others who were elected to the BOE. I think not only the kids but the taxpayers deserve the candidates that are elected to the Board, finish out their term, and not use this as a stepping stone prior to expiration of their term.

Most of them are already mentally out of it before they even start. This is an important decision and everything should be evaluated. Which means we also shouldn't throw candidates aside because of there name.

Al Scala and I Don't Think So:

(By the way...wasn't I Don't Think So the shortstop in the Abbott and Costello "Who's On First" routine? ;-)

Is that the litmus test? To promise to finish out the term? That's a pretty low bar to set; haven't most BOE trustees finished out their terms? (I agree that if elected, a trustee should complete his or her term. What he or she chooses to do afterwards is up to him or her. I would think that anyone interested in civic service would start on the BOE. That should not be considered a bad thing The experience probably makes for a better councilman, mayor, etc).

They all do. (Don't you?). Wouldn't you like more money from the State? Particularly since we pay so much of it, and get so litte back. (99% of our state taxes go to Camden, Newark, Paterson, and a pittance comes back to us to be used in our schools).
The question I believe you meant to ask is, "who is in favor of increasing taxes?".

Well Chicken Little, I apologize. I was trying to be tactful. I find that some BoE members would prefer smaller property taxes over better classrooms. I'm asking who prefers better classrooms at the cost of higher taxes. I personally believe that the payoff of better schools far outweighs the cost of higher taxes. So I'm interested to know who of the candidates agrees with that sentiment, or rather who actually supports it.

Chicken Little..I could have stated several more reasons why Cathy Kazan is a good candidate and why she would make an excellent trustee. She has been proactive in attending meetings, reviewing the agendas and asking questions. She is certainly not afraid to probe when something may be unclear. I like that. She is a gutsy gal. About your other comment....I have no problem with someone running for higher office off the Board. The problem I have is USING the BOE purposely for greater gain. I have a problem when someone is elected and then doesn't serve his term out, jumping to what he or she deems is a higher position. Have you treated the electorate fairly. They campaigned for votes, then left those voters for personal gain. It's called integrity, and I certainly don't think that is setting the bar too low. However, you and I are on different areas of the spectrum here. Cathy has demonstrated over time her passion for our educational system by working and volunteering in various capacities associated with the educational system in this town. I think that stands for something. She is intelligent, articulate, and why not have a person of her caliber on the BOE.i

I am uncertain about Cathy. There are things I like about her. Yes, she attends the all of the board meetings (at least the meetings that I watch), and has been active with the PTO. But I find her to be more gadfly than an honestly concerned citizen. You see gutsy. I see snide and condescending. Maybe I read her wrong, and she just doesn't come off well on TV when she speaks at the board meetigs. But she seems to get into too many pissing contests with the board. That is something which bothers me.

Cathy and I both co-chaired "The Concerned Citizens of Wayne" forum this past year. She is a devoted and dedicated citizen who really cares about our communty. She has spent countless hours working in our community AS A VOLUNTEER. I find her refreshing because she speaks her mind and you never have to question what she is truly thinking. The fact that she is a volunteer in the community is really offset by the fact that everyone running is a volunteer in some capacity, i.e. coach, ccd teacher, already on the Board... Although I don't know where Mr. Bubba stands in this regard. What we need to look at for each candidate is where they stand on issues around education and responsibility on spending.

For those of us who have been to board of Ed meetings and followed the direction that the current board is going, many feel it is time for change. We need to know that decisions that are made are for the good of our children and not just for the good of the superintendant. We need people on the board to speak up if they don't agree and not just follow along. When I make my vote this is will guide me in my choices. Become well informed of where the current board sits on issues before making your votes. I can honestly say I am not happy with many of the positions the current board has taken on issues and I will be voting for change. As a foot note I did feel Jane Hutchinson was the one who did speak up when things were wrong. I am so sorry she is not running again because she would have my vote!!!
