Repair work on Valley Road between Ratzer Road and Hamburg Turnpike will continue on Friday.

Valley Road at Ratzer is expected to remain closed through Friday evening while repair crews complete work, Department of Public Works personnel said. The road is being repaved and resurfaced.

Valley Road heading away from Hamburg Turnpike was down to one lane on Thursday.

Traffic was backed up in the area while the work was being done this week. Detours have been set up and residents should expect delays when driving in the area.

The work is the latest to cause delays in downtown Wayne this summer.

Repair crews struck and broke a water main on Hamburg Turnpike broke last week causing traffic jams and road closures in the area. The incident also meant local residents had to boil their water before drinking it for a day or two.

Workers also struck a gas line going into a house earlier this week. The leak was a minor one and PSE&G responded and quickly repaired the line, police said.

A 20-month-long road improvement project on Hamburg Turnpike began in June.

The $9.4 million project is expected to take approximately 20 months to complete. The major work of the project involves installing jug handles on the heavily-traveled roadway.

One ramp will be constructed between the Chase Bank building and the former Casey O’Toole’s site. The move will allow westbound traffic to turn left onto Valley Road.

Another ramp will be installed between the Valley National Bank and Caldwell Banker parking lot and the Ramapo Shopping Center to allow eastbound traffic to turn left onto Valley Road.
