Wayne Looking For Farmers
Vendors needed for first ever Wayne Farmers' Market. Township will receive points towards sustainable certification.
The township is accepting applications for what officials hope is the first annual Farmers’ Market on June 23.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the municipal parking lot across from the library’s main branch. Spots are available at no charge to vendors.
“We’re providing residences the opportunity to purchase fresh produce and maintain farming in the state of New Jersey,” said town planner John Szabo. “We’re saving gas, reducing fuel consumption and our greenhouse gas emissions too.”
The market is part of the town’s Sustainable Jersey certification initiative. The point-based system is a statewide program. Municipalities achieve the certification based on actions they take to improve the local environment and sustainability efforts.
There are 16 spaces available to use. Each spot will be 30 feet by 30 feet. Tents may be used, but they cannot be secured into the pavement. Electrical hookups and water will not be provided.
Spots will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants will be responsible for installing and removing all their equipment.
Resident Victor Alfieri thinks the market is a “great idea.” Alfieri was instrumental in getting the idea for the market off the ground. Alfieri is a sustainability advocate and annually grows several hundred pounds of produce at his home.
“It’s fantastic that we’re moving in this direction,” Alfieri said. “I’m disappointed that it is only happening one day and only for four hours, but I think it’ll probably be a success. I think the town is just putting their toe in the water and you can’t really tell how cold the water is just by doing that.”
Prospective participants need to return the attached application and waiver form to Szabo. Forms can be mailed to the Planning Department, care of Szabo, at 475 Valley Road, Wayne, NJ 07470. Forms can also be faxed to 973-872-0586 or scanned and e-mailed to email@example.com.
Applications are due by June 17.
