Three More Burglaries Reported, Jewelry Taken From Residences
Incidents are the latest in a rash of burglaries that occurred since the end of April. Police urge residents to report anything suspicious immediately.
Wayne Police are reporting that three more burglaries occurred in town between May 31 and Sunday, June 3.
The burglaries are in addition to 12 that already occurred in recent weeks in the Valley section of town.
Jewelry was taken in all three of the burglaries, said Detective Capt. James Clarke said.
A home on Donald Court was burglarized on either May 31 or June 1. Entry and egress was made through a broken window on the back of the house. A house on Indian Road was burglarized between June 1 and June 3. A residence on Dartmouth Road was burglarized between May 31 and June 2. The front door was forced opened at the latter two residences.
Many of the more than a dozen burglaries have occurred at night. Alarms were not armed in two of the homes, police reported.
“The common denominator is they are looking to ensure that a house is vacant first,” Clarke said. “Then they wait to see when it first gets dark and to see if nothing is going on in the house.”
In two of the earlier incidents, people attempting to gain access to the homes through windows awakened residents, police said.
People reported seeing suspicious vehicles and individuals near some of the homes before they were vandalized. Mail was piled up on the property of one the homes.
Police are urging residences to proactively protect their homes.
“Leave a device on, put lights on timers, tell someone you’re going to be away,” Clarke said. “Stop the mail or get a neighbor to take the mail in or stop the newspaper from being delivered.”
Clarke urges people to report anything suspicious to police immediately. The police department can be reached at 973-633-0600.
“Call us, we absolutely need the public’s help with this, we can’t be everywhere,” Clarke said.
The department has been deploying uniformed and plainclothes officers into residential areas to deter these crimes from continuing.
Police are working with the Bergen, Passaic, and Morris County Prosecutor’s Offices to investigate the incidents.
The department's Community Policing division can provide residents with preventative measures they can take to deter burglars from their neighobrhood. They can be reached at 973-633-3546.

What about having the neighbors walk the streets in turn each night? Or are people too scared about the whole Trayvon thing to bother?

How about our police department doing their job??? they should be more concerned with patrolling our neighborhoods instead of policing rte 23. Just what do you think comes to ones mind when they see 7 WPD cars behind one car pulled over. SO who is patrolling the town??? I asked how many WPD cars are on the overnight shift and I was told 9. OK, its boring at 3 in the morning but isn't that when burglars strike? or are these daytime break ins?

Are you for real? who does law enforcement prevent break ins etc... want cops to walk the beat? then don't cry when our taxes go up. And I don't wanna here well out cops are over paid and so forth. Being an officer is not an easy job as what people think, they went to collage, went to an academy and put their lives on the line, yes even giving someone a traffic ticket can go bad. They start with a low salary and work there way up just like everyone else. So lets not start pointing fingers in the wrong direction. Its crime and it ain't going away. People has power behind a lap top but have not to get involved when something seen is wrong. That's my take on this.

I agree, KrisTee. Cops don't have to walk the beat, as fboy66 writes, but it would be nice to see the patrol cars cruising our streets more rather than participating in some speed trap fundraising. I have noticed more patrol cars on my street in the past week. Hopefully this continues.

Walking the Streets is unsafe....Leave different lights on throughout the house. When a house on Black Oak was broken into, my neighbor called to let me know, It was unnerving because it was so close. She said it happened when the people went to work. Whether the person or persons were caught I don't know. Just be aware of who is driving around if you're outside. It's hard where we live because we have many vehicles cut through our Street.

Yes walking the streets can be, but then again didn't we move into this neighborhood so that we could walk safely on our own streets? We live in Wayne, pay higher taxes, etc. so that we don't have deal with this kind of stuff. If there were more officers patrolling the streets on a regular basis then the neighbors themselves wouldn't feel the need to take matters into their own hands and patrol.

how about the fact that the average Wayne Cop makes $140,000 a year with overtime, and the PD has a staff of 111, that is $14M a year for them to sit around trying to give us tickets for speeding, or running a red light, while these people are terrorizing our homes. I saw a cop parked on Hamburg Tpk in a flower shop parking lot at 9:30 pm which is when most of the burglaries are happening. These cops are overpaid and too worried about giving out tickets. Ever robbery one of those cops should lose their job, they also should not get paid for overtime, most working citizens don't get paid overtime or 6 figures, so the people that our tax dollars pay shouldn't get anything close to that. The Wayne police should have every single unit be driving up and down our streets every night, without exception. And why was the mayor, Sheriff and half a dozen police at Wayne day, doing nothing to solve the problem????

Brad - I hate to agree but I have railed about this here before. I see WPD cars parked in their driveways all the time (one cop is in my neighborhood). I haven't seen in awhile, but WPD hang out at Corrado's all the time shooting the breeze while on duty. Route 23 is a money-maker for the town with the ridiculous speed trp just past NY Avenue. The arrogance with which the police carry themselves in all interactions with the public is detestable. The money they make for what they do is asinine (mostly due to liberal overtime). I agree with the patrol idea and have advocated for same. Especially in a time with a rash of burglaries (the third time there has been a rash in less than two years), patrol cars should be out and visible. The cops seem to be everywhere but where the bad guys are. And the lack of news about the crime is even more disturbing...every community does this in an attempt to appear like it's 1950s or the movie Pleasantville where nothing ever happens. I think a community PR/awareness campaign would be far more effective in getting leads instead of burying the news. If it weren't for Patch, we wouldn't even know about this. Now, at least we can tell people and maintain some vigilence. What is really scary is that these break-ins are reportedly at night, when people are more likely to be home. Sooner or later, that will lead to violence.

Let me follow your logic, after every break-in, you want an experienced cop to lose his job? That makes a lot of sense, as crime increases, get rid of experienced officers to handle it. As soon as a kid gets hit by a car speeding down the street, you will be barking that cops aren't doing their job enforcing the speed limits. And another point, many breaks in cases like this are come through "routine" traffic stops. Those cops are usually positioned in speed traps in response to citizen complaints. Just because you are tax payer and happen to watch CSI doesn't make you an expert managing a police department, WPD is out in force employing county and state resources, they will catch them or deter them. In the meantime, get a dog. Finally, most citizens with the level of training that WPD officers have are compensated at the same rate, I'll pay $75 more a year in taxes to get a good cop with military experience.
Brad

The problem is that there is no fear because the republican party controls the town and has for so many years, that there is no fear of public officials losing their jobs. I vote for the best candidate so I am by no means a democrat, but the arrogance is truely out of control. Citizens should be showing up to town meetings and demanding the removal of our police chief and Sherriff and that each robbery results in a layoff of police personnel to hold them more accountable. The worst part is that they PD will use this as an excuse to rack up more OT and more taxpayer money going into their pockets, and they still wont stop anything, because they wont shift resources to the problem, they will still patrol route 23 and other areas for tickets and just dole out more OT for the rest of the department....

I can't understand somethings with our PD, coming home late from work and seeing 7 WPD cars with one car pulled over on Rte 23 makes so many questions. I am told there are 9 patrol cars on the rode overnight. If 7 of them are on the highway that makes one think that only 2 are proactively patroling the town? I understand special circumstances but how can anyone explain 7 cars for one stop at 3 in the morning?

People here are still naive to understand how times changed and how this town has changed. That 25 year ago mentality of being safe doesn't exists any-longer. Alarms don't work it makes the thief work faster, my belief and security that does work as a back up is a dog, it doesn't have to be what I have it can be any dog to be trained. I think that stretch is 50 MPH from about Alps Rd. to Jackson Ave. Not sure but it's definitely not more than 55 and around Ratzer Road it's actually 45. The police love to hide at the No-Name gas station just under the bridge, particularly on Saturday and Sunday a.m. and random nights after rush hour.

Bunch of scaredy cats, you have no idea. I lived in Trenton for several years. I had my car stolen, apartment robbed, and my fiancé was mugged. Here there is a bunch of burglaries in your rich spoiled town and you act as if the world is coming to an end. Sure blame the cops, the Mayor and everyone else but whatever you do, don't blame the people who are breaking into homes to feed their heroin addiction.
I have a question ?? If the cops suck, the mayor sucks, the Board of Ed Sucks, the taxes suck in Wayne, then why do you still live in this town.
Move out and go live in Trenton. I guarantee none of you would last 6 months there the way you keep crying here.

Steve you just proved a good point right there saying we are a bunch of scaredy cats. You might think these burglaries are small things in our town but its people like us forcing the cops hands and taking matters into our own hands that will take a problem like this and prevent it from becoming like your great Trenton. Big problems like those in Trenton or the surrounding towns that these jerks are coming from (Patterson, Newark, etc.) start off with smaller problems like we have now in Wayne and escalate when people do nothing and then it gets too big to contain. We have to be all over these burglaries and let people know we are not going to just sit back and take it. This is our town, our homes, our families and we will do everything necessary to protect it.

Steve, the whole reason we pay premium prices on our houses and insane taxes is to live in a town where these crimes do not happen. I am sure your house in Trenton is $200K and taxes are like $6K, but when you pay $500K for a house and $12K a year in taxes there is a big difference. We pay that to live in a community with good schools and zero non domestic crime...
Steven McNally
8:05 pm on Monday, June 4, 2012
Brad, I hear you, but first off I pay a lot more then $12K in taxes on my house in Wayne. I am blessed to live here now compared to what I experience in Trenton.
However Brad, I think people are ignorant to think for one minute that ANY town including this one has zero crime, perfect schools and perfect politicians. You should have seen the idiot cops that came to investigate my crimes when I needed them in Trenton. As the old saying goes "You get what you pay for".
The media loves to create panic and that is exactly what is taking place here. If I remember correctly the last set of burglaries resulted in 5 arrests so lets see what happens.
On a side note I am planning on opening a third MMA school possible in the Wayne area so I will keep you posted in case you want to join and learn what to do once the burglar gets into your house.
Brad

Steve what we really need to a better punishment. People will only obey laws where the punishment is severe enough to prevent an action. If they put in a law that said if you go one mile over the speed limit the fine was $10,000, no one would speed. We need to make burglary in the same class as other terrorist activities. Someone breaking into your house, which is supposed to be your safest most secure place, when you have pets and children, is terrorism. Make the penalty 25 years in jail, or if they flee the scene have the police shoot them. If you send a strong enough message the crime will stop... Too many people are paranoid about that Trayvon Martin stuff.... If you break into my house, I should have every right to shoot you, regardless of race, or religion.

Not necessarily. If you kill an intruder in your home who is threatening your life or the life of someone else, you will be exonerated. I have knives in my kitchen, do you? People - just keep your eyes open - even if there's a car that "may" or "may not" belong in your neighboorhood, keep an eye on it - and if you don't like the looks of something, call 911. Simple as that. There are a lot of streets and neighborhoods in the town of Wayne, and the cops are out and about, hopefully doing the best they can. A family member was stopped this morning on her daily walk, by an unmarked car and asked if she noticed anything strange. The burglars are probably scoping out the houses during the day, for their night-time adventures. I'm turning into a wreck because one house on one end of our street, and another on the other end were both broken into. And the one thing that really gets me, is up until the end of last week (and thanks to the Wayne Patch) - I hadn't heard ANYTHING about these break-ins. The media is always so d@mn quick to post all the negative news, so why so quiet on this?? (Finally, last night, Channel 12 local news reported about the most recent break-ins)... Anyway, KEEP YOUR EYES AND EARS OPEN people! And as Charlie Danials sings in Simple Man (although I'm a woman....still applies here!) "Now I'm the kinda man that'd not harm a mouse
But if I catch somebody breakin in my house
I've got twelve guage shotgun waiting on the other side"

Dan - Have you interviewed anyone at WPD? Is there a reason why crime sprees like this one and two other recent burglary sprees are never publicized? If someone doesn't read it here or in a blurb in the Record/Wayne Today, we'd never know about it. Are the police at all forthcoming about these incidents? I don't expect commentary on leads or investigation status, but can you ask, on behalf of your readers/THEIR public, how come so secretive about such an important development? This is the third major burglary spree in the last two years that I am aware of, I am sure there is lots more that goes unreported. The difference is now that break-ins are coming at night when people are home, which is FAR more dangerous. Criminals are getting bolder - how could it possibly be better to burglarize at night when people are much more likely to be home? This has the potential to end really badly for someone - what kinds of resources is the WPD throwing at this? How much manpower? How many stepped up patrols? It's nice for them to tell us to be vigilant, but how about letting us (and the criminals) know WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT IT, WPD! Your presence is the BEST DETERRENT!

Paterson is spelled with 1, not 2 t's. Furthermore, most of Wayne residents come from Paterson, whether or not they want to admit to it. Additionally, profiling potential criminals from Paterson, is not only inaccurate but dangerous. It can build a false sense of security for an actual thief that may be from Hamburg or West Milford, for example.

I saw the news 12 report last evening around 10 pm. Some residents spoke. There is no reason to be ashamed and quiet if one is a victim of a crime. It is important to uncover it, bring it to the surface, demand that it doesn't happen to anyone else and and seek recovery for all damages. Plenty of attorneys in this town that can come up with appropriate compensation for the victims.

It was just an example of the surrounding towns. It could be any surrounding town near Wayne that these people are coming from. Actually I know of quite a few residents of the town that did not originate from Paterson and I'm one of them. As far as I can tell, there is no false sense of security for these criminals except us sitting on our butts not doing anything. That's why we should be having neighborhood watches. Wasn't that what they were originally for? To watch the streets you live on and report? But I guess no one wants to do that anymore because of the whole Trayvon thing like I said the first time I posted.

we need to send a stronger message, Wayne Police Chief and Sheriff should announce that they consider home bulgary to be an act of terror and they will shoot to kill and home invader. We shouldn't worry about this Trayvon nonsense. We are the ones being profiled, they aren't robbing poor people in newark or Paterson, they are profiling us and targeting us because of our home values and income. That is just as much profiling as any other kind including RACE, age and sex. We need more profiling and a much stiffer penalty. I have lived in Wayne for 31 years, and never met anyone who grey up in Paterson and moved to Wayne....

Considering Wayne's population, I imagine that you and others are not from Paterson; but the statement appeared to imply a highly, negative criminal element to people who are from Paterson and that is "profiling". I would hope that if I wore a hoodie, no one would shoot me dead.

Actually, it is none of your business where I originated from; but I did not originate from Paterson. Paterson happens to be the seat of Passaic County: its' Administration, Superior Court, etc. For that reason alone, it deserves a modicum of respect; similar to Washington DC, the capital of the US. Your attitude of claiming that I am no better than anyone else exemplifies your competitiveness, that is so prevalent in Wayne, and possibly that is what non-Waynees (Pompton Lakes, etc) want to destroy as it is nauseating.

Considering the location of the homes that have been invaded, cul-de-sacs without easy access; it is probably someone who is extremely familiar with the area:(directly caused by the township's outsourcing for the garbage pick-up, recycling pick-up), even newspaper delivery people. All of these people know all the routes better than its' citizens. I will have to get the stats on the houses that are robbed in Paterson or Newark.

People you're becoming overly touchy with each other. Most of the people that live in Town now are not from here. It doesn't matter if they came from Paterson .Coming from Paterson doesn't make someone less. Come on now. I came from Bergen County but couldn't afford to buy there after I got married.That doesn't make me less than; it's a fact. We have a problem now in OUR town. So, we shouldn't be touchy with each other. We all want a safe Wayne Township. I hope it just stops.

Another time I had a chain saw and climbing spurs stolen out of my truck at a local bar. That time they gave the case to a Det. that was away at school. And he wouldn't be back for a week. It took me 3 times to find the guy who stole them. I did what I had to do. Then the cops wanted me to tell them who it was. I told them to do there job and find him like I did. I LUV WAYNE.

Always support local, county and state police. Promote the use of profiling in our community and build a strong network of neighbors that you can communicate with daily. Most people only look out for themselves and think this only happens in other towns. Once everyone works together to support our local PD the safer the township will be. Are you truly aware of your surroundings? Can you notice something not right? Do you have the balls to call the police?

Citizen report
Date: 06042012
Time: 20:48 EDT
Location: Hamburg Turnpike
Spotted: 2 Wayne Police cars sitting in the parking lot of the First Aid Squad, engines running, lights, on, both in their cars, shooting the ****. One of them was the cool new car that seems to have gotten as much press as the burglary spree.
With apologies to whoever wrote the theme song for the immortal TV show Car 54 --
There's a burglary in the Valley;
The hills have broken out in fights;
Theres a traffic jam on Hamburg that's backed up to Perlmutters bikes;
There's a scout troop short a child;

Jay, how many homes are there in Wayne?? C'mon get serious now, go around knocking on doors??? What and where do other police forces do this at? Name some towns the size of Wayne.. You forget about when the police have to respond to other things without hesitation like say domestic violence calls,never knowing whats going to happen. Fatal car accidents. I for one tip my hat to the WPD..If you see as you claim hanging around getting FREE donuts as you claim, then why don't YOU write down the car number and complain to headquarters?? Hopefully you will never need the assistance of the WPD but if you do, im sure they would do a good job.

That's why i think the residents should take shifts and walk their street plus one block. Get two or three home owners to walk the street for 30mins then go home and another set follows up for 30mins and have the residents on the next block do the same thing. Do that between dusk and 10pm. After 10pm is when we SHOULD be seeing the cops patrolling in their cars and using spotlights to check dark areas. If they actually did that from 10pm to lets say 4am, that should help out. At least its something. Get them away from Rt 23 for awhile and do something productive.

The speed trap is marked incorrectly the 40mph is supposed to be for he black oak off ramp not for route 23 the sign is on the off ramp, not on route 23.... They need to clarify that sign it is highly misleading there is no reason for all of route 23 to be 55mph and Bentsen out of nowhere it drops to 40 mph because of a sign that isn't even on the highway, it is on an off ramp... How is this related??? Most of the time there is at least 3 WPD cars sitting on route 23 trying to give out tickets... They need to pass a law or guideline that Wayne of can only spend a maximum of 15-20% of their quota of wait the changed it and now call it a productivity report.... To be sort on tickets and the rest on crime prevention and patrol.... Tickets should be the least important function of their department..

The problem is that our police are bored, so they patrol the highways to try and get some action. Sad part is that criminals know that they do this, they drive around your neighborhood and easily see that the PD is no where to be found. The reason the PD gets paid so much is our fault, the town agreed to the contracts when times where good. Next contract, no raises, Bloomingdale and Wanaque did it, we can do it, 140K is more than sufficient to live a good life in NJ. I just left Wayne Mazda, he lost 6 cars Wed. night right out of his lot. 6 cars, you can't tell me the word is out that Wayne has easy pickens. Wayne's World, I'm not meaning to insult anyone. I'm trying to come to an understanding of how Justice can claim something (Justice - "Furthermore, most of Wayne residents come from Paterson, whether or not they want to admit to it."), I then question that claim, and then I am attacked for my question, labeled as prejudicial and deceptive. To me, Justice is being adversarial and overly defensive over something that he/she could just say, "There is no form of official references or supporting documents. I could be wrong. Maybe not MOST of Wayne residents... maybe I should have said SOME of Wayne residents..."
Not really a big deal, but why attack me for my question? As I stated before, I have lived in Wayne for about 33 years. I personally don't know any families who've moved here from Paterson. Totowa? Yes. Clifton? Yes. Garfield? Yes. Connecticut? Yes. Brooklyn? Yes.
I am not saying no Wayne residents moved here from Paterson. I am just pointing out that, from my experience, MOST of the residents of Wayne aren't from Paterson.
If the good name of Ed Zachary is attacked, I will defend it properly. That is all.

The Dr you refer to from High Mountain Medical Center here in Wayne, well, he and I graduated from JFK High School in 1972. There are quite a few Patersonians now living in Wayne. How many? Don't have a clue!

The "ed zacharys'" of the world would turn away Giants' Victor Cruz' millions to live in Wayne because he is from Paterson. Victor Cruz, spend your money elsewhere, in a town that is less prejudiced.

I moved from Paterson to Wayne. At that time my taxes where 8K, now they are 17K. I and anyone who pays taxes in this town has a right to air their thoughts in a forum as this or anywhere. I attended many BOE meetings two years ago complaining about how unrealistically the BOE taxes us. In reality some of our bordering towns pay a lot more in property taxes so I leave the BOE alone now after someone finally answered many of my questions at a BOE meeting. I'm very bothered that these break-ins have been going on for the past 6 months and our town PD has never ask for assistance until now. Otherwise I'm very happy in this town and appreciate what the town does for its residents.

Ed Zachary, you are what your chosen pseudonym states. Be a real man and give up your psycho nonsense. Based on the info you provided, looks like you never fought a war.

Wayne's World, I pray this never becomes a dictatorship. Too many lives lost to keep our freedoms.
