Superintendent Won't Speculate on Possible Sequestration Spending Cuts

Officials still working on finalizing 2013-14 school district budget.

District education officials won’t speculate on the effects possible sequestration spending cuts could bring to the district.

Funding for education in New Jersey would be slashed by nearly $30 million should Congress fail to halt $85 billion in spending cuts scheduled to go into effect Friday.

“Any specific comment on the potential impact of our sequestration on our district would be purely speculative,” Superintendent Ray Gonzalez said in a statement Tuesday. “We’re not actively engaged in the process of planning our budget for the 2013-14 school year, and all decisions are being made based on tangible information currently at hand.”

If the spending cuts do go into effect the state would lose $11.7 million for primary and secondary education initiatives and another $17 million for more than 200 teachers, aides, and staff who assist children with disabilities.

The district is still refining its preliminary $132.2 million budget. The average homeowner’s school taxes would increase $205 if the budget were approved.

The district is looking at a $2.4 million shortfall if all programs and district services are kept the same.

Officials are still waiting to hear how much state aid the district will receive. Wayne received $3.8 million last year.

The Board of Education approved the preliminary budget last week.

“We plan to publicly share detailed information on this upcoming budget within the next several weeks,” Gonzalez said.

Officials will host another public meeting about the budget at Wayne Valley High School at 7 p.m. on March 14.

Are you serious? A 2% cut in the inflated budget should not effect any thing. Its all scare tactics by a fraud for a president. All this guy wants to do is raise taxes and spend money like crazy.

$2.4 MILLION ? Get rid of half the administrators you put on recently and you can save that money without effecting the teachers or children.

The increased admin cost directly attributable to Gonzalez is $2,4 million annually?

The 11.7 million in potentially lost aid equates to about 18k on average to each school district in NJ. This is if my number of 650 public school districts is correct. I'm not quite sure of that number. We all know that the distribution is not made equally, as the urban districts get much much more than we suburban districts. In today's paper, I believe it said that Governor Christie wants to increase State school aid by 97 million which could equate to an additional 149k in aid per district , which it apparently will not be due to the distribution to urban districts. This is an election year with the Governor on top of the ticket. Hopefully that will bring in a bit more State aid to our district. Anything over last year's aid of 3.8 million would be great. Anything less, would be extremely disappointing.

Al, you will never see the "suburban" districts get more than the "urban" districts. Who do you thinks pays for the urban districts ? You and I in our suburban district.

Wayne, way to much fat at the top of the budget. Dean of Students ? Asst. Dean of Students ? And list goes on. We had the same amount of kids as today when I went to school and since then ALL these "titles" have been added to the budget without any reason why we need these positions ? What do these people do a principal doesn't do ? And all for "six figures" ? Hope I addressed your comment and last time I checked, everyone seems to be cutting back except our BOE (BRING ON EVERYONE).

Nose, I understand your point. I'm just curious what the incremental cost is from before Gonzalez to now and if the $2.5 MM is directly related to his admin

This goes back a few years, but as we get new administrators, they don't want to stir up the hen house so they leave the chickens alone.

I just paid a visit to the State Report Card for the 2010/2011 Wayne Hills High School Year. Two items were glaring:
12.9% Students with Disabilities??? Is this a true number or trumped up in order that certain administrators keep their positions?
1.1% Limited English Proficient? In Wayne??? Again, is this a true number?
We are talking Wayne Hills (Pines Lake, Vizcaya, Urban Club). I would like to know who these students are.
"Students with Disabilities
Percentage of students with IEPs
(Individualized Education Program)
regardless of placement/programs 12.9%

Limited English Proficient (LEP)
Percentage of LEP students

1.1%

Language Diversity
First language spoken at home in order of frequency.
Language Percent
English 74.2%
Spanish 5.1%
Arabic 3.6%
Korean 3.6%
Russian 1.1%
Italian 1.0%
Polish 1.0%
Other 10.4%"

I know from past experience that APT was very aggressive in trying to mainstream children with disabilities. I think know a days, though, disabilities has a much broader inclusion than when we went to school.

Nose. I thank you for adding them. It was not a deliberate ommission. However you have proven my point further. I was only thinking of temporary overseas executives that have been placed in the mentioned areas that may have students who are not proficient. Insult not intended. Thanks Nose for adding to my argument.

Would say a lot of the people today that live in the apartment complexes don't speak english or have jobs. We are supporting them through section 8 and other government supported programs.

Nose. I wasn't certain about that. Next question : Property Taxes for BOE need to be adjusted by the 18,000 or so per student that requires this extra. The wave of prior immigrants assimilated and learned English through tutors, tv, churches, etc. I personally know of many such immigrants. Immigration used to demand an Affidavit of Support from a.US citizen prior to being allowed to set foot on our soil. No government welfare or English as a second language. We are struggling and do not want to out right pay for these students. Get the money back from welfare or call ICE. Period. End of Burden.

Jack Q. Have you ever been around immigrants? Have you ever been around immigrants who pretend to not understand English? Have you ever worked with immigrants who openly call Americans, "amerikaans" and make fun of them, calling them soft and lazy? Have you ever worked in an establishment where you or your child is pushed out of a minimum wage job, only to be replaced by immigrants who punch the clock under several names in order that there is no violation of labor laws? Have you or a child been requested to pick up "workers" from a hotel/motel housing immigrants at an unsafe person per square footage and take them to work only to be later pushed out for "lack of work"? When you can answer yes to any of those questions, then you are allowed to make your snide remark, only after further questions.

Yes Justice, I have been around immigrants. My parents were immigrants. I also work with a lot of immigrants. So that is yes to two of those questions so I can proceed. Your generalizations really take away from your argument.

These immigrants are not the same as the immigrants who built this country and assimilated. Granted there is the exception to every statement. I have a long list of immigrants who died fighting for the United Stated during the Vietnam Conflict. There is also a long list of immigrants who are in the military for the express purpose of assimilating and becoming US citizens. There are many exceptions; but I doubt those exceptions are also taking welfare or Section 8 housing. Unless of course, they need it as a temporary help to get on their feet. (another exception). Again, in the fiftes, an immigrant could not set foot on US soil without an Affidavit of Support. They were returned to the country they came from. Visit Ellis Island when you have the chance. There is a huge difference.

"The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952

The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) of June 27,1952, was a major revision of existing immigration and nationality law. It continued, with modifications, the essential elements of both the 1917 and 1924 Acts, as well as those provisions of the Internal Security Act of September 23, 1950, relating to the exclusion of Communists.

The 1952 INA reflected the cold war atmosphere and anti-communism of the period, following World War II at the onset of the Korean War. The law was in essence an act of conservatism rather that of intolerance. The difference between the climate of opinion in the 1920s and the early 1950s is apparent in the following statement in the 1950 report of the Senate Judiciary Committee. "Without giving credence to any theory of Nordic superiority, the subcommittee believes that the adoption of the national origins quota formula was a rational and logical method of numerically restricting immigration in such a manner as to best preserve the sociological and cultural balance of the United States." In contrast to the 1920s, the case for the national origins quota system in the 1950s was not generally argued on the grounds of racial superiority, but on sociological theories of the time relating to cultural assimilation. The discriminatory provisions against most Asian countries were also slightly relaxed by the 1952 Act.

Hey Jack, my grandfather came to this country with pennies in his pocket and didn't speak a word of english. He got a job right away and learned english. He had a family he took care of and worked well into his seventies building most of the historic buildings you see today in Paterson. And NEVER asked or collected a dime from this country. So don't ASSUME anything, because you seem to be the only one ASSuming here.

@Nose, that's great, so did my parents. But when you talk about deporting people because that can't speak English, that makes you the ASSumer. Do I think that people should learn English, absolutely. Do they have a right to be here, of course as long as they follow the law.

Mr Gonzalez should start making some big cuts in the overinflated BOE budget. Enrollment is dropping and I am sure there is a lot of fat on the administrative side that could be cut. Did they really need a "CONE OF SILENCE ROOM" built inside the BOE building? They need to really stop excessive spending until better times come back. Wayne Township is soon going to find itself in a terrible fianancial situation. Many top school districts in NJ get by with 0% increase in thier budget and many are rated much higher then Wayne. The taxpayers pockets aren't the BOE's private piggy bank.
