Wayne Hills Student Rep Sees the Potential in School District

Senior David Ostern's first priority 'is to ask: how can I change the future of education in this district?'

David Ostern sees the potential in the Wayne Public School District.

Ostern, a senior at Wayne Hills High School, is the school’s student representative to the Board of Education. He also is president of he senior class. Theresa Pascrell is the student representative from Wayne Valley High School.

“I see Wayne public schools having both high schools ranked in the top 20 in the state,” Ostern said. “I think with the leadership of someone as versatile as [Superintendent] Ray Gonzalez and having a Board of Education that has the ability to provide a bright future for our students we can get there.”

Hills was ranked 35th in the state by New Jersey Monthly magazine last year. Valley was ranked 64th.

Ostern isn’t afraid to speak his mind at board meetings. While many student representatives often just read a list of financial gifts the district receives, Ostern gives his honest opinion about things.

“By representing everyone, I have the ability to create cohesive ideas,” Ostern said. “My first priority is to ask: how can I change the future of education in this district?’”

Ostern isn’t afraid of being in the spotlight either. He was executive producer of “From All Angles,” a student-run television show. He’s also helped raise money for the American Cancer Society in the district’s annual Relay for Life cancer walk. He has aspirations of becoming a lawyer. He has applied to Syracuse University and Indiana University, among other schools.

Ostern also wants to move over on the dais and become elected to the Board of Education someday.

“My first priority is to move back to Wayne and become a trustee and president of the Board,” Ostern said. “I’m totally up for the challenge.”

Ostern wants everyone to understand what the ultimate priority of local education trustees should be.

“People need to realize that the kids come first, and we’re not here to argue,” Ostern said. “Being a trustee, you have the power to do so many things for people. It creates change.”

It is a good thing to have student input. Is Ms. Pascrell any relation to the Congressman?

I'm really not trying to be mean, but come on- 2 days in a row- articles about a HS senior on the Bd of Ed- as being so influential and wise.
That's really going to get Wayne in the top 20 in NJ Monthly. Maybe we need to talk about state funding & the lack thereof? How about CCSS, class size, new curriculum, the lack of materils supporting the new state mandated curriculum, new teacher evaluations & the empasis on test scores, the de-emphasis on phys ed & arts, the importance of math & science, the changing demographics, the dramatic increase in students with learning, social & emotional issues, the rising costs of health care, the increased comlexity of meeting the needs of students & following the guidelines of the state! How much of that is Mr. HS senior going to understand and address? This is going to look great on his college application. Now take some time to feature other noteable seniors,

I agree. Although it would have been nice to have a balanced article and give more than one sentence to the young lady from Valley. Similar to the Signing Day story where the Ms. Ademi was lucky enough to get a sentence while the rest of the article focused on the football players.

First of, that last time I checked in order move up in the rankings as a school your student-body must meet high standards inside and outside of the classroom. David is the epitome of what every student should act like in order for a school to prosper together. Second off, you don't even know David as a person or what his beliefs are so who are you to make the assumption that "Mr. HS senior" doesn't understand or address the issues you listed? As a matter of fact, I can guarantee that David carries a much heavier awareness and understanding of these issues than you can even comprehend. Also, you wrongly assume that David is simply doing this so it looks good on his college applications. Well last time I checked, most seniors are done applying to college by now so this article in no way gives him an advantage on his apps. David has also been accepted to great colleges and instead of doing what the typical senior does and stop caring, he still strives to make not only himself better but also the community better. He continues to work so diligently not so it "looks great on his college application" but so he can leave the most positive impact on the schools as possible. Instead of trying to criticize students who take action towards solving problems, you follow in the footsteps of students like David and take action.
Thank You.

@ EL - You really should not underestimate that abilities of this student (or any other, for that matter) to understand and to help address the needs of our schools! Did you ever think that this young man is involved in his school and in his community, not because it would "look great on his college application," but because this is something that he believes in and is passionate about??? I for one will never get tired of reading about the wonderful things that our high school students are doing - certainly beats hearing about the negative things! Oh, and by the way, "Mr. HS Senior" has a name - it is David Ostern and our community should be proud of him and all of the other students that stay informed and get involved to make our schools and our town a better place

I do think it is wonderful that students are involved in civics. I also would like to hear what Pascrell has to say, considering she may be related to our wonderful Democratic Congressman. Unless of course, Democrats need not speak in Wayne?

I have lived in this community most of my life and have seen the quick descent of the school system. It appears to coincide with the patronage appointments made to our Board of Education. It is now over 30 days and it is still a "DaVinci" mystery as to whom will replace the Very Manipulative Kingston who is now enjoying herself in SouthLake. I am still waiting to hear that the will of the people has been adhered to. Perhaps when there are elected Trustees, then, once again, the Wayne will be in the top tier of the state.

Justice,

Could you clue us all in as to what you mean by the "quick descent" of the school system? As a parent with children in the school system, I would love to know all the new problems that haven't been there for the past 15 years.

The current super added additional expenses by adding an assistant to the tune of another 6 figures, a PR Dept, his own legal firm, etc. That was to start. Another layer was added through directorship of the high schools, middle schools, elementary schools. Layer upon layer of 6 figure staff for a suburban district. UNHEARD OF. How many other patronage jobs will there be? As I was once informed, the teachers can only work with the tools they are given. Apparently, the budget for those tools have gone to the 6 figure staff who do not appear have accountability to anyone, except perhaps to their "padrino"?

So there is more administration, I can agree on that. But your implication is that the education level has descended, am I reading that right. And I wouldn't worry about the tools the teachers have. Have you been in a classroom lately? Smartboards, flat screen TV's, solar panels... Our schools are not hurting for resources.

To all of you incredibly rude and mean-spirited people: The above article was about an outstanding young man who has contributed so much to Wayne Hills High School, and to this community. You have used the comment section of this article to rant and bash!! I would like to thank Mr Hubbard for sharing with Wayne what a special person David is. He is well respected by his peers and the administration as well as a son who makes his parents proud every day!! I know all of this because I am his mother!! The next time an article is written about another student, let that child have his or her moment and keep your unnecessary comments to your self!

@EL----I would suggest maybe you should go to a BOE Meeting and listen in and give input to the topics discussed. How can you make the assumption that this student wouldn't understand any of your topics? If you actually read the article and looked into the details you would have seen that this student basically created a television show for MSG Varsity in his US History II Class while ensuring that the teacher was still able to meet all of the requirements of the vigorous curriculum. In addition, the show was about social, political, and economic topics of society. For someone who aspires to be an attorney and has revolutionized the way learning is taught in our schools by creating a "Co-op" type experience for students, I think this student would understand your issues EXACTLY! This isn't a position that Wayne High School Principals just randomly choose. Mr. Reis and Ms. Weir realize that with constant change and issues arising it is important to have the best representation. Mr. Ostern and Miss. Pascrell truly represent the student body and contribute to our district and community in so many good ways.
@FrankGallagher-----This website isn't used for entertainment purposes. Mr. Hubbard works very hard to keep the entire community informed of all hot topics and issues. By making a comment like that you're insulting him and your comment to TheFirstMother just shows how immature you are and how you can't contribute anything meaningful to this article.

I think this article is full of undeserved praise. Attending school with Mr. Ostern, I am aware that while his intentions are good, he alone cannot get Wayne Schools to become perfect models of academia. Class elections are, for the most part, popularity contests. Our student council president is simply a boy with plenty of friends who is outspoken without much thought behind his words. Having goals for one's future is great, but there are plenty more Wayne students doing far greater things in the present who are overlooked. Board meetings are not the only way to make a difference in Wayne.

@V-----Mr. Ostern is actively involved in Relay For Life, is a coach for recreational basketball at the Boys & Girls Club, and has participated in numerous volunteer activities such as Keeping Babies Safe (Head Volunteer), Foundation For Fighting Blindness: Vision Walk, Morry's Camp Swim-A-Thon and much more. Writing about the classic stereotype of saying it's the most popular person because its a popularity contest is ridiculous. Maybe you need to realize that people actually believe this person is a leader and a unique individual who understands the needs and wants of all of his peers and not just one group of people within the grade. Mr. Ostern has clearly demonstrated uniqueness and individuality. If other great things are going on in Wayne then maybe you need to reach out to Mr. Hubbard for him to write about them. You are clearly being stubborn and your logic is childish. This student deserves to be happy for what he has done.
