George Washington, Theunis Dey Closed, Superintendent Says
Before and after school care will be provided.
George Washington Middle School and Theunis Dey Elementary School will be closed on Monday, Superintendet Ray Gonzalez said.
All other schools will open on a delayed schedule.
"We hope to have George Washington and Theunis Dey open for Tuesday, but he final decision will be made [Tuesday]," Gonzalez. said.
Gonzalez issued a notice to residents Sunday afternoon about officials’ plan of action for the week. The notice was sent out at 4:30 p.m. and updated a half hour later.
"We will only open up a school if we are confident that students and staff are safe and sound,” Gonzalez said in the notice.
Officials said they are going to try and operate as many buses as they can.
“We’re concerned about kids walking with possible live wires down. We want to make sure that students and their parents are able to get to school safely,” said Board of Education President Donald Pavlak Jr. as to why the schools will open later rather than at their regular times.

Keep the schools closed if no power or not safe to travel.
Plenty of time to make up the time.
The school year should be 12 months anyway.
What is the down-side?...Who is against that?

Just don't have mid-winter recess instead of adding it on when it is 95 degrees out in June.

The Govenor can also sign an executive order lowering the state public school attendence requirement from 180 days to 175 days. Doing so would allow the schools to remain closed this entire week. Under normal conditions, the schools would have been closed on Tuesday November 6th and again on the 8th and 9th.
They could make-up the 1 day ( Wednesday November 7 ) on Friday February 15 2013, and shorten the Mid-winter resess by 1 day.
This allows the towns and cities in New Jersey time to make the necessary transition's - not just our's, but those that don't have any school to go to.
Boards of Education all over the state have to configure schedules for students that are being relocated to other schools, this includes busing, lunch programs etc.
I'm all for getting the kids back in the classrooms ASAP, but let's do it the right way.
Bringing them back when they don't have anything to go home to is only going to cause more problems.

It was just reported on the news that out of the 2700 public schools in NJ less than 800 will be open tomorrow. Adding in the fact that just over half of the state has restored utility services, a pending N'oreaster coming our way that will surely slow down our gasoline services.

We, and our neighbors, reported the power line down blocking access to Theunis Dey on Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday. There was a truck there around 4:00 pm Saturday and they left cones in the area. I expected them to return on Sunday to complete the job, but they did not show up.

Same happened on my street. Fire department was called twice due to sparking wires in the street. PSEG came, left cones, put some orange tape and left. PSEG and JCPL will be focusing their time on cities, not our towns. Remember getting a few apartment complexes up and running boost their numbers a lot more than getting one street in Wayne up and running.

I have received calls 3 days in a row from PSEG letting me know my power has been restored. Funny since my street is littered with downed trees, snapped poles and wires. Again, wondering if they are making these calls to falsely boost their numbers. 8th Day since the storm and not one person has done work on our street. I am no fool, I realize there are people in worse shape.
