Wayne residents can apply for assistance from the federal government for damage incurred to their personal property as a result of Hurricane Sandy.

The federal government has extended individual assistance to Passaic and 10 other counties.

Previously, assistance was approved for only 10 counties.

The assistance comes from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Individual and Households Program (HIP).

Homeowners can apply for up to $31,900 in reimbursements for the following expenditures: Money to rent a hotel or other temporary housing, repair damage to their homes not covered by a homeowner’s insurance policy, repairing or replacing vehicles damages by the storm, or paying for public transportation.

Congressman Bill Pascrell announced the extension Monday night.

“Many residents in Passaic County are still without power, forced to find temporary housing as they put their lives back together after the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy,” Pascrell said in a statement. “With assistance, I know that we can start the process of rebuilding so we are even stronger than we were before.”
