Red Light Camera Back In Action

Town may begin issuing summonses to violators caught by the camera. Issuing of summonses was suspended in June. Department of Transportation needed to certify that traffic signals where the lights are located were properly working.

Wayne has the green light to start issuing summonses again to violators caught running a red light using a special camera.

The state Department of Transportation (DOT) directed 21 municipalities in the red light camera pilot program to last month to motorists caught running red lights at intersections the cameras are located at. Wayne has a camera at the intersection of Black Oak Ridge Road and Hamburg Turnpike.

Ther camera did not cease to function while the certification was being conducted. Alleged violations were still filmed, but summonses were not sent out.

The DOT ordered the suspension of issuing violations because it determined that the proper duration of the yellow light at the traffic signal might not have been correct. All 63 cameras were recertified, the DOT said in a statement Wednesday.

According to a study by American Traffic Solutions, the camera could save taxpayers and the town more than $1.1 million in the next five years.
