Police Investigating A Dozen Burglaries In Valley Section Of Town
Cash, jewelry taken from many homes.
Wayne Police are investigating a dozen burglaries that occurred in the Valley section of town in recent weeks.
The burglaries took place between April 25 and May 30, police reported.
Most of the incidents occurred in the evening. Forced entry into the houses was gained mostly through windows that were pried open.
Jewelry, money, watches, and coins were reported taken from some of the homes. Bedrooms in several of the incidents were ransacked.
A safe was taken from one of the houses and a smaller safe at another house was pried open.
The burglaries were reported on Alps Road, Valley Road, French Hills Road, Brandon Avenue, Sunny Knolls Court, Witkowski Way, Heights Road, Judith Place, MacDonald Drive, Pleasantview Drive, and Louisa Court.
Alarms in two of the homes were not activated, police reported.
Residents reported seeing several suspicious vehicles and individuals in the area of some of the incidents.
“It definitely appears that in the majority of these burglaries they are waiting for darkness to set in, which makes it easier to determine if someone is home or not,” said Detective Capt. James Clarke.
An attempted burglary was reported Thursday on Diorio Court. A homeowner came back to her residence at about 9:40 p.m. and discovered a burgundy sport utility vehicle in her driveway. A startled male drove the vehicle over the curb and out of the driveway, hitting the homeowner’s vehicle, which was partially blocking the driveway.
The homeowner said the bald man had dark skin, looked to be between 30 and 40 years old, and wore a dark-colored shirt.
A surveillance camera at the residence filmed the SUV pulling up to the driveway. Two men got out of the vehicle and walk around the back of the house. The men looked through windows and a sliding glass door before noticing the camera. They appeared to become nervous upon noticing the camera. The report states the men jumped over a fence and into a yard on Fairfield road. The men appeared to be thin and were wearing ski masks.
A K-9 unit from the Passaic County Sheriff’s Department tracked a scent from the scene but lost it on Fairfield Road. The report states that the sheriff’s officer believed the felling males were likely picked up by a vehicle and left the area.
Clarke said that it appeared the team of three men used some form of digital communication during the incident, Clarke said.
A homeowner observed a white Honda parked on Moro Terrace facing French Hill Road on April 25; a white male was seen walking on French Hills away from a burglarized home on the street, police reported.
A neighbor of a house burglarized on Witkowski Way reported a large, dark-colored SUV parking on Benson Drive, police reported. The neighbor reported the driver exited the vehicle and hid in the bushes of the burglarized residence before the incident occurred. The driver was described as a white male of average height and weight with thinning hair.
A suspicious vehicle was parked in a driveway on Alps Road at about 9:30 p.m. May 13, police reported. The driver backed out of the driveway when the homeowner turned lights on, illuminating the driveway. The homeowner reported the driver parked the vehicle on Wilson Avenue, walked up Wilson toward the house, and later fled on Wilson Avenue. The man was described as white, in his early 20s, 5 feet, 6 inches tall with a thin build and short brown hair, wearing beige pants and a black, short-sleeve T-shirt police reported.
There were two other attempted burglaries reported on May 23 and 30 and Hamilton Avenue and Valley Road, respectively. Those incidents occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. on both days. In both instances, individuals tried to gain entry into the homes through bedroom windows but were scared away when discovered by homeowners.
Clarke said that the department has been in communication with the Passaic, Bergen, and Morris County Prosecutor’s Offices about the incidents.
The police use digital frequencies to talk with each other, which makes it more difficult for potential burglars to listen in on department communications.
Clarke urges residents to support anything out of the ordinary to police. Residents should call 911 if they witness something happening in progress. They should call the department and speak to a dispatcher to report a possible incident after they think one has occurred. The police can be reached at 973-694-0600.

What were the other ways? As a resident in the area described in the article, I would like to know so I can help secure my property.

This is a step in the right direction regarding reporting burglaries in Wayne. As a member of the Concerned Citizens of Wayne, I am happy to see that our crime prevention forum illustrated the need for better communication with the community. I live in this neighborhood too and will now be even more vigilant about using my alarm and watching for suspicious vehicles. Thank you Wayne PD.

I live in this neighborhood as well and I find it very unsettling that I have to worry about my safety and my children. These burglaries are out of control ! Something needs to be done...the same thing happend this time last yr. And now here we go again. I do see police patrolling the area during the day but it only seems to happen when something goes wrong. I feel the police need to step it up. Be out there and more present during the day as well as night especially since this is when the robberies are occurring. I really hope our crime rate slows down and quickly because it is getting scary to live here.

Liz you are so correct, our PD is too busy doing anything but proactive patrol work. I never see a patrol car in my neighborhood but one positive note is that when you call them they do make it to your location quickly.

These reports are just that: REPORTS. From the news article, there have been no apprehensions, no arrests and most importantly, no return of the stolen items. When someone takes something that belongs to you, it is a violation of the deepest kind. It is a mental RAPE of the most heinous kind. Your life is never the same. You no longer feel safe and secure. You are always looking over your shoulder. The worst part, is that you don't know who did it and when it will happen again. You don't know where your dead father's prized purple star went, or your grandmother's engagement ring, or your original birth certificate that can't be replaced because it is from a foreign country which no longer exists. These items cannot be replaced. No amount of insurance money (if there is even full coverage) will bring these items back. Your world is now broken, lost and you will never, ever be the same.

Actually, with all the police cars that are parked at any of the Wayne DunkinDonuts every day/night they could hold a PBA convention. Absolutely nothing wrong with the policeman grabbing some form of refreshment, however when there are six cars (including shift/tour commander) parked in these places for over 1 hour then yes, I have a problem with that. How about a little more neighborhood patrol in the morning, afternoon, evening, night hours !! As residents we pay a tremendous amount of taxes and we should have some level of comfort knowing that while we are at work our property is being patrolled by at least a single cruiser. (While being home from work over the past holiday, I can honestly say while working in my yard (an averge of four to five hours a day x 4 days)). I never saw a single police vehicle . We are talking normal hours in the Valley Section of town. I guess they were to busy discussing there next doghnut run.... How about a few less tickets handed out during the morning commute and a few more car patrols in the neighborhoods. Is that a fair swap ??

Nose.....the best deterrent to crime is ourselves. The police dept can only do so much. Can they do better? I don't think I'mcapable enough to answer that. I certainly hope our Chief is pondering that question.I'm sure he is.If we had 100 more police officers than we had now,I'm sure there would still be crime in Wayne. You're certainly not going to eliminate it completely. The best we could hope for is to keep it at a minimum. I think I'll go load my 9mm.

Someone is casing our neighborhoods and they are dark because the town is trying to save money on keeping our streets lit. Rolling up the sidewalks is a bad idea in suburbia. Then there is the noise ordinance which adds to the target. Actually, if I was a thief, Wayne is a great target, no one ever gets caught. Suppose everyone stop congratulating the Police dept for their abject miserable failure in stopping these wholsale burglaries through this entire year! The Police did not alert the community in a real time manner since April until Patch stumbled over the reports. Mayor Vergano's gag order on staff speaking to the press is wrong! Patrol officers making 120-k pr year and this is the net result? People commenting about gun play?

These burglars don't seem to be too worried abot the Wayne Police nor the citizens alertness nor their combined ability to detect, report, aprehend, and prosecute. They run through this community at will, any time day or night, and this town is ineffective to stop it from all accounts so it would appear.

The real crime is the power the police unions have locally in diverting an unfair share of taxpayers' money to the Wayne Police. We are greatly underfunded for the Fire Department and overfunded for the Police. Take a look at the audit and balance sheet for Wayne Township. The Police Department needs to be more proactive in preventing home burglaries. They spend an inordinate amount of time at Willowbrook.

Warren, our volunteer fire department can put some paid towns to shame. They are one dedicated bunch of people. They survive on the fund drives they have during the year. I whole heartedly support them and so does the town. I believe it costs the town about 9K a fireman a year to keep them geared up safely. That is a bargain.

The Township is something like 26 -28 square miles; that never changes but the population grew plus lots more stores , resturants etc. which brings in outsiders. The burgulars also have easy access to the Highways.
