Pair Who Allegedly Shot at Wayne Officer Indicted in String of Hold-Ups

Fort Lee man and alleged accomplice charged with robbing at least nine locations.

A Fort Lee man has been indicted with his alleged accomplice in connection with a string of at least nine armed robberies at stores and gas stations, during one of which they shot at and grazed a Wayne officer.

The federal grand jury in Newark returned a 19-count indictment against borough resident Nelson Otero, 47, and Maxcime Cagan, 46, of Floral Park, N.Y, , according to a release from the US Attorney's Office.

The pair were charged with nine counts of armed robbery and one count of conspiracy.

One of the alleged heists took place on May 5 at a 7-Eleven on Broadway in Fair Lawn. The pair hit an Exxon Station on Route 23 North in Wayne five days later, the indictment alleges.

The string that federal authorities identified began in March at a liquor store in Elmwood Park and ended in Mount Laurel in mid-May.

The pair were charged in June with shooting at Wayne Patrolman Brian Worrell when he responded to the Exxon Station. Worrell narrowly escaped death, as one of the bullets grazed his ear.
