Alleged Burglary Couple Due in Court This Month
Pair arrested after seen on security footage that went viral on YouTube, police said.
Ahmet Islami, 20, of Haledon, and Majorie Alva, 21, of Elmwood Park were each charged with two counts of burglary, theft, and receiving stolen property after they were seen on video attempting to retrieve a football from a Oxbow Place resident's backyard.
Jewelry was taken from two Oxbow homes on Dec. 3 and Christmas Eve, police said.
Authorities discovered their identities after they found jewelry taken from one of the homes at a jewelry store in town, police said.
Islami is free on $25,000 bail; Alva was released on her own recognizance, Court Administrator Lori Ellicott said.
Police previously said two homes on the street were burglarized. A neighbor of one of homeowners recognized the pair from the surveillance video.
Ellicott said the matter will be referred to Passaic County criminal court.
A pre-trial indictment conference is scheduled for Jan. 25. Evidence will be presented at that conference. Litigators will then determine the next course of action.
A plea bargain could be struck at that conference, the charges could be downgraded, or litigators could determine that a trial needs to be held, Ellicott said.
