Online Petition Created to Support Chris Olsen

Petition states that Board of Education made decision to "repair their reputation."

An online petition has been created to bloster support for Wayne Hills Athletic Director Chris Olsen keeping both of his jobs with the district.

The Wayne Board of Education approved a new policy earlier this month prohibiting school administrators from coaching sports teams or actng as advisors to extra-curricular clubs.

Olsen, who has won eight state sectional champsionships as head coach of the school's football team, will have to choose in what capacity he wishes to continue working in the district. The policy goes into effect July 1.

The policy states that “any situation requiring decisions as to action taken in extenuating circumstances as it pertains to an athletic team, co-curricular, or extra-curricular club are made by a member of the school district’s administrative or supervisory staff. As such, a member of the district’s administrative or supervisory staff cannot serve as his/her own supervisor.”

The full text of the petition reads:

"The Wayne BOE has approved a new policy which prohibits Administrators and Supervisors from Coaching sports teams or acting as advisors of any district athletic, co-curricular or extra curricular activity.

This decision would mean that Coach Olsen would have to decide if he will remain as the Athletic Director or Football Coach. The Athletic Director at WV must also make a similar decision.

Clearly this ruling was made as a reaction the events of this last fall. The BOE was criticized and now makes this decision to make it appear that they are being proactive but they are just trying to repair their reputation. This is the same Board who just a few years ago decided that it would be fine for a person to operate in both capacities. This new ruling would not change the events of the situation of last fall as the coach did not act as his own supervisor but followed the supervision of the Acting Superintendent and the BOE.

Whether or not you agree with this new policy, it is unfair to put into place now while each of these individuals hold both positions. This forces these individuals to make a decision they should not be forced to make. When they took these positions, there was no way for them to know that they would one day have to give one up. At the very least, there should be a provision made to allow them to continue in their duties as both coach and AD. It unfair to make someone choose between something that they love and are passionate about and something that makes financial sense.

Please sign this petition to keep Coach Olsen in both his role as Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, 2 positions in which he is absolutely the most qualified!"

Really? We are going down this road again. What is it with these Wayne residents? Do rules not apply here for some reason? I did not grow up here, but have been a resident for over twenty years, and this Olsen nonsense is really wearing thin. Come on folks, time to move on. Let the man choose a job and let someone else take the other one. Time for you to grow up and stop living in a “Football” movie from the eighties, where all the towns people rally around the aggrieved coach! It is embarrassing.

I have nothing personal against Coach Olsen. He is a successful Coach. You have to give him that. However, I too agree that a person should not be both AD and head coach. It's a conflict to oversee yourself. Secondly, during football season, how much time does he have to keep his hands around every other athletic endeavor going on at the school. He is also the strengthening coach and other responsibilities include him overseeing all the gym teachers in all our other schools. Just doesn't make sense. I think our BOE made a very unwise decision putting themselves in this position. Not a good one! Thankfully, they have rectified their wrong. Hopefully, this petition will not affect this any further.

Grandfather laws are part of laws all the time I done see why this is should be different. And people stick up for him because if you really know him and not pass judgement on him before you do. You would see that he is a great man who would do anything for his students.

Keep the position as Football coach, lead your son and the Wayne Hills Football Team to one more State Championship...then move on. Wayne Has never been able to keep up a winning program in anything, and this one is an exception to the rule.
If you wanted to get away with everything, you should have joined the Wayne Police, not the WEA.

This article, with a link to a petition and the ensuing posts in support, are about as dopey as it gets. How is this petition even legit. No addresses to verify residency, the Name- Anonymous, posted a few dozen times, duplicate signings, Nicknames,,really a complete joke, but then again this whole affair has been a big joke played on the tax payers of Wayne. Once again folks, time to move on. Don’t worry about Chris Olsen, he can take care of himself. He will choose one of the positions, and life will go on. I only hope this article doesn’t get picked up by any news sites. A continuation of the embarrassment we all had to endure in November and December.

A new law should go into effect next school year.. give the people who hold these jobs time to make financial decision. Maybe Olsen & the WV coach need to get an Athletic Director job in another town or switch AD jobs and keep the respective coaching post.. They both deserve respect & empathy. People are funny, no one saw the hypocrisy in this situation for years until this incident? The real issue is the morality & social acceptance in the sport culture as one of self importance over rational thinking! The boys that decided to act out inappropriately are responsible not olson who is holding town approved jobs. Lets not forget the real issue here. Children who play sports should know that their actions (the good and the bad) will be 100% acknowledged equally with no exceptions. Towns seem to "support" sports at all costs creating kids incapable of realizing that acts of violence are unacceptable? The new YMCA in town (read their mission statement) should be in charge of the town sport progm! Maybe Olson should get a job there as AD, & coach WH footbl too! Maybe scl dist. shoudnt run the town sport progm! Sportmanship & citizenship go hand in hand. Previous to this happening, olson appeared positively media wise & the town has lived off this positively!

Leanore being Athletic director and a coach or advisor is a big conflict of interest. It shoudn't occur anywhere not just in Wayne. I'm sorry to say Olsen does not deserve respect anymore. He has suspended other people for much smaller offenses but never one that has to do with football. Clearly in that incident because Olsen was going to let his kids play no matter what there needed to be an Athletic Director who could over rule him. Think about this what if a former student missed something because Olsen suspended him from it on an accusation? What would you tell that kid? Hopefully he requests football coach other ise people will still have doubts. This whole things needs to be put to bed.

Olsen was let go at every single prior job he held. He makes plenty of money in his position in Wayne. He needs to go. He shows favoritism to certain players, has had incidents in his position in Wayne etc. He is a very poor role model. His locker room language and demeanor is also bad. He is not a God and Wayne Hills Football will survive without him for sure.

The fact of the matter is, an individual serving as coach AND Athletic Director IS a conflict of interest, regardless of who the individual is. I do think the incident which occurred in the Fall spurred this action however it's long overdue. And for those of you who commented that it has never been an issue for anyone before, I'n sorry but you are incorrect. Plenty of people have taken issue with the fact that Coach Olsen is also the AD however, for whatever reason(s), those voices were never given much creedence. I feel badly that both of these gentlemen have to make what is probably a tough choice for each of them, however the fact that we continue to try to make exceptions to the rule for one individual is wearing very thin. Just as info., the football league we used to play in has a rule that the head coach cannot be the AD. Just so happens the league we currently play in does not have that rule.

I do not support this petition and feel that the board is correct that no employee should be acting as their own supervisor. That shouldn't happen anywhere at any time and this correction is long overdue. Olsen should definitely choose football coach as he has only been the AD for 2 years and does not have tenure in this position. The situation that occurred this fall clearly shows the conflict of interest and Olsen may not be offered the AD job for a third year by the board. He does not properly conduct himself as an administrator in this district. If we had an untenured principal who behaved as he does they would have been shown the door a long time ago.

thanks for all the updated information. I do not know the particulars of Olson's job history and the like but remember, changing rules midstream that affect ones financial wellbeing and being ok with it, opens the door for ANY job , your job , to change on a moments notice for any reason at any time. I am sure alot of you feel you do a good job and have evidence that you are seccessful just like Olson. There is no respect or loyalty anymore for anyone. It is sad that this seems to be the sign of the times and more and more people are jumping on the bandwagon without realizing that this behavior is threatening to everyone in the workforce. There is a bigger picture here, what about the WV coach who has to decide ? Why was the decision to let coaches also be AD OK before this? Can anyone answer that one?

Leanore I'm sorry but sometimes changes have to be made for the greater good. And I do feel bad for the Valley Coach but they can't just make it the Chris Olsen rule. If he wants to be the coach and the A.D. Then he is only the Coach when he is on the field for practice and games. As the Athletic Director he should have kept his mouth shut instead of getting up there and saying they should be allowed to play.

but your words imply that olson was the only person who ever held the two positions? Your rationale does not hold weight since the town had more than one person holding these positions as such and recently I might ad so how is it the "olson rule"! Seems like your views are such because you personally dislike Olsen.

Lots of people like Olsen lots of people hate him. I don't think Any person of any school district should do it. We are not talking about other school districts we are talking about Wayne. I consider what Olsen was doing a abuse of power. When I said that it can't be called the Chris Olsen rule I meant they can't just take Olsen out of it and leave the other Wayne guy in. I think the policy is a good idea because of the Way Olsen acted like a coach instead of an Athletic Director during the whole suspension thing.

While yes I do feel bad for the Wayne Valley guy. However Olsen was not being the Athletic Director during those kids suspension he was being the coach. You cannot have that. I would have had no problem if Olsen did not say anything about his football players being suspended. He shouldn't be both because important situationas he's going to be the Coach instead of the guy in position of power.

3 days before the Hills v Valley game Olsen, knew he did NOT have a full heathy squad. For 3 days he fought with both the Valley AD and football coach claiming the Friday night game should not be played, due to potential rain. he wanted to move the game to Sat,( this way giving his injured an extra day to recover and an extra day for practice.) Valley refused to yield, so Olsen called on his best friend Tim and the BOE to put pressure on Valley to postpone the game. 3 hours before kickoff on Friday, the call came from Superintendent Roth, to move the game due to "potential" weather. Was Hills eating their "pre game meal"? Nope they were on the field practicing. and Valley? they had just finished their pre game meal and were in pre game mode. Olsen went to great extremes to get his way. Would he have been this concerned about weather if he was playing Hackensack? Nope ... He may be a fantastic coach, but as an AD? I think his vision is blurred

The changes are a done deal. To get the decision overturned is going to take a lot more than an on-line petition.
There are very few teachers, administrators, or politicans in the state that can claim the success rate of a program as Coach Olsen can, but he has reached a point where every win on the field went against him off the field. In the end it was sports and politics as usual.

As a matter of fact they were eating their pregame meal. I have personal knowlegde of this. Themteam did their walk thru and then ate. Would you like to know what was served that night? The decision came down after that. Many people from town go to hills valley game and the admission is great, in this case for valley. Why not changemitmdue to weather? Isn't it safer for all involved. M really the rumors that swirl around this town are ridiculous. And not just in this case.

How is it a school like Don Bosco Prep EXPELS on the spot a nationally sought after player for tweeting bad things in which no one really got injured and Coach Olsen lets his players play and then defends them after 2 students wind up badly injured in the hospital??? Is this player going to hire a lawyer to file suit for potentially ruining his career like the no name, not sought after players of Wayne Hills? It's plain to see the difference between Coach Toal and Coach Olsen..One represents the school while the other only cares to represent himself..Standards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kelly if this is true then this board needs to be recalled. Why even have a board or a superintendent why don't we just have Olsen make all the decisions. The fact of the matter is that when things were bad Olsen was the coach and not the A.D. To make sure it doesn't happen again put in a rule that stops people from serving as a coach and A.D.

This is the best BOE we have had in along time. They are putting into effect a polciy that makes sense and is needed. Had Mr. Olsen really cared about being the AD, he would have acted like one when it came time to decide what to do with the accused players. For him to try and say he did what he was told, then why didnt he do what he was told when it was decided they should be suspended. Instead he marched into the BOE meeting like classless mindless, football jock trying to intimidate and bully the BOE by MAKING his players come dressed. Quite honestly, he gave the BOE no choice but to enact this policy becuase of his total disrespectful behavior to the administration, the police force and the town. If he had any class at all he would retire. He is a total emabrrassment, but then again anyone that knows him and isnt tied to his football team know what he has been all about since his days coaching days at boys and clulb and PAL.Now the whole town knows.

My opinion of our BOE has no relation to Coach Olson. I too am very unhappy with the way that whole fiasco was handled, not only by Coach Olsen, but by the Board as well. I resent the way they use this platform as a stepping stone to further their political agenda. My feeling is the BOE should be a non partisan board seeking an excellent and cost effective educational system, not running for Freeholder or hoping to get appointed to a council seat. Also, shutting out a Board member because she may not agree with your plans or because she is inquisitive of more detail smacks of being a little to political for me. I simply disagree with you and could post many more things here but simply do not have the space or the time.

But Al, the BOE has always been used as a stepping stone for advancement in the political arena here in Wayne. Look at current and past members that serve or have served. Same thing with Planning and Zoning. People on these boards have NO background at all but are only appointed by the Mayor..Didn't you ever wonder what the criteria was to get on the planning or zoning boards...I watch these meeting and am amazed..The only difference between MOST of these members, not all but most of them and Bozo the Clown is, They wear more makeup than Bozo does...

Coach Olsen & Coach Kilday are great coaches & athletic directors.
They can handle both jobs - they have been for 2 years.
Many (100+) schools in NJ allow A.D.'s to coach.
Passionate and capable people working inside the schools should be given first choice to coach.
The children will suffer because of this ruling.
This may make some people "feel good" - BUT THE KIDS WILL SUFFER....
Dr. Gonzalez can't fix this- he was just hired and the board would hang him.
Kevin Olsen doesnt have to play this year - he is good enough and will go to the college of his choice for free....

Jealousy is a bad emotion - try to control it.

These men have dedicated themselves to community and children for many years and should be allowed to continue

Children will be the one's who suffer
