Morris Canal Greenway To Have Bike Lanes
County receives a grant to install bike lanes, walking path improvements to proposed greenway in Clifton and Paterson.
Bicycle riders will have more space to participate in the activity soon.
The Federal Highway Administration has awarded a $530,000 grant to create bike lanes and improve walkways along the proposed Morris Canal greenway in Clifton and Paterson.
The Greenway is a proposed 25-mile long walking and cycling path along the former Morris Canal, part of which is slated to run through Wayne. The purpose of the project is to preserve and restore open space and create safe recreational opportunities for pedestrians and bicyclists.
A hike of the Wayne portion of the canal will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday Aug. 5.
The grant will add eight miles of bicycle paths and pedestrian safety improvements to the Greenway, including sidewalk upgrades.
County officials approved the greenway project in 2011.
“These funds will allow for the completion of a greenway trail, providing safe recreational opportunities for local residents and families,” said Freeholder Director Pat Lepore.
