Mitchell May Return As Vice Principal If He Isn't Granted Tenure
Beloved administrator already has tenure as vice principal of Schuyler-Colfax Middle School. Mitchell was appointed interim principal in 2010. Lobbied for tenure as principal at a special hearing Monday night.
If the Board of Education decides not to grant Robert Mitchell tenure as principal, the administrator will have the option of remaining at Schuyler-Colfax Middle School as vice principal.
Mitchell pleaded his case for tenure to Superintendent Ray Gonzalez, the board, and other district officials during a hearing Monday night.
Gonzalez recommended to the board earlier this year that Mitchell not be granted tenure as principal. The board took no action on the recommendation, said board President Donald Pavlak Jr.
Mitchell requested the hearing after learning he would not be granted tenure.
Mitchell has tenure as vice principal, a position he held for 12 years before the board appointed him interim principal in December 2010.
District officials did not say Tuesday afternoon whether or not the board has granted Mitchell tenure. Officials have three days to respond to Mitchell's testimony.
Parents and teachers have publically expressed their support for Mitchell being granted tenure.

If Bob Mitchell does not get renewed as Principal, and a new principal begins this Summer, that means Schuyler will have its 4th principal in as many years. Now, let me clarify this. Dorothy Sherwood retired I believe in 2009. Frank Mobilio was Principal for about a year and a half, then retired. Bob Mitchell was made Acting Principal for the last half of the 2010-2011 school year and was Principal this year. This Summer a new Principal will begin. Is this the consistency and stability we want in our schools? Does this type of change affect our children? Is this amount of change in a short span of time good? Leadership is important. Is transient leadership good? I don't confess to know all these answers. I do know that having four different principals over the last four years is not favorable in my eyes. One person posting says change is good and we should not be afraid of change. Change is good sometimes if it's positive, and constructive. I guess we're going to have to wait and see what this new Principal will do and what he or she brings to our District, and to Schuyler. I think I'll take Potter's advice and embracet change and not be afraid of it! This November, I will be voting for change by voting out the 3 Trustees that are part of the in power faction! Remember this November. Change is good!

When Sherwood retired, they never looked for a new principal because they owed Mobilio a job. You can say the same about superintendents as well. How many have we had since the crook Nuccetelli was fired? Let's see, Sico, Roth now our current one.

@ Taxpayer...Nucitelli was a real crook, what did she do? Subscribe to the wall street Journal on the BOE dime? I clearly recall the audit and they came up with nothing material. They were looking to run her out so everyone made mountains out of mole hills. If you ask me she was 100 times better than what we have and have had since.

Taxpayer.....O.K. Is all this change, shuffling good? Sico began as an Acting Superintendent, then got appointed permanently. Roth was strictly acting. Nucitelli was a disaster. Sico was only permanent I think less than a year, and walked away with a pretty hefty buyout, at our expense. Actually, I thought Roth did a decent job, although there are some things he allegedly did or didn't do during that football fiasco which may show him in an unfavorable light. The one common denominator here is our BOE trustees,

If the last interim Superintendent didn't give in to pressure and put Mitchell in the position in the first place this wouldn't be an issue. He was passed over a few times for a reason. I think it's impressive that, for the short time he's been here, Gonzalez saw that he wasn't affective as a Principal and took action. Mitchell is a nice man and has been a good VICE-Principal.

I wasn't implying guilt at all for Mobilio. I believe his innocence. He did lose his job but was kept on as a district employee. When he came to Schuyler, he had to constantly work under that cloud which could not be easy. However, I remember the firestorm when they announced his appointment 2 weeks before school started. That, I believe was intentional. Why would the board want to deal with that all summer when they could only deal with it for two weeks. I don't believe the constant shuffling is good, whether its superintendents, principals, or teachers. I do expect a high level of professional from all levels for the amount of money we are paying. All I can say is vote them out if you don't like them.

Hey NUT,If you think he is a nice man and did a good job as Vice-Principal,then WHY don't you think he would make a good Principal? Gonzalez saw he wasn't effective?,He couldn't SEE if he had two telescopes strapped to his eyes!!

You are all a bunch of fruit loops, and this is the reason Wayne has the negative reputation it has. What you espouse is the infamous "Wayne Way."
The superintendent has excellent credentials and experience (you all misunderstand his involvment in Paterson, and fail to recognize his experience and success outside of Paterson). He is going to get us to the next level. Stop clinging to the rocks, and be willing to swim!

Have we learned nothing from past experience in Wayne? It should definitely be considered a conflict of interest to have parents of children currently attending the Wayne school system sit on the board and dictate who stays and who goes. Mr. Mitchell has been a constant at Schuyler-Colfax through all the other transitions and it is his leadership that has carried the school through. The board is where change is needed - not Schuyler-Colfax - and I for one will be expressing that in November.

Fruit Loops. ?.......I've actually been called worse. You are certainly a pessimist but I guess that's good. As I've stated in my posts, I think Dr. Gonzalez is entitled to a year or two to establish himself and put his mark on this system. I'm willing to be patient. Do I agree with his position on Bob Mitchell. Absolutely not. I'm certainly not going to agree with everything he does. However, I do like him and think he will do a good job! As far as the Board is concerned? I will give them nothing. Their time is up!
Do we tend to vent as you intimated some time ago in a post. You bet your backside we do. We're frustrated with this Board and it just keeps getting worse. The new policy about talking on agenda items or in the public session,. are they kidding me? Are they trying to keep us from talking and asking questions? Maybe they'll respond, maybe they won't. Are we in Russia? What ever happened to Public Work sessions? Gone by the wayside. Now everything is done by committee, behind closed doors. Transparency? I don't think they even know how to spell that word, nevermind they understand what it means! Any public entity should be an open book. They are the farthest thing from it. Why are they holding things so close! That scares me! There is an old saying. The fish stinks from the head. Our BOE trustees are the head!
