Local Leaders Preparing for a 'Spirited' Mayoral Race
Democratic municipal leader wants to give residents a 'real choice' this year.
Local political leaders are prepping for a “spirited” mayoral campaign this year.
Incumbent Chris Vergano is seeking re-election as mayor while the Democrats have nominated a college professor to run against him.
“We’re looking forward to a spirited campaign,” said John Traier chairman of the Passaic County Regular Republican Organization.
Vergano has a long history of public service. The mayor since 2008, he served on the town council from 1986 to 1990 and from 2002 to 2007. He served on the Board of Education from 1992 to 2001.
“Mayor Vergano has a lot of years of experience,” “He’s gotten the township through a lot of major problems.”
Vergano received a lot of criticism, along with the council and other town officials, following Tropical Storm Irene in 2011. Officials did not have a shelter ready for residents before the storm hit North Jersey.
Recently though, Vergano has made it a priority to have the Board of Public Utilities revoke Jersey Central Power & Light’s license to sell power in Wayne. He blasted JCP&L for the company’s lack of response after Tropical Storm Sandy.
“I believe he is imminently qualified to be mayor,” Traier said.
There could be some competition for Vergano soon. The Wayne Republican Party for the People could put up its own nominee and the two could face off the primary election. The deadline to file is April 1.
New Voice, Real Choice?
The Democrats have nominated Francine Del Vecchio, a college professor, to run against Vergano.
“What Wayne needs right now is a fresh start,” said Ray Egatz, chairman of the Wayne Democratic Club. “We need someone who is going to commit and not just fall back on what’s been done for the last 20 years, unless people are happy about their taxes going up every year.”
Republicans have enjoyed years of success being elected to local office. Many Republican candidates have been elected and re-elected. Fifth Ward Councilman Chris McIntyre is the lone Democrat on the council.
“All I can do is demonstrate that we are trying to give residents a real choice between two candidates,” Egatz said. “Like us or don’t like us, it’s better for everyone if the Democratic Party is alive and well than if we are not.”

What are the educational credentials of the current mayor? He was one of the "appointees" as opposed to the initially "elected". What is his full time job that keeps him from attending to the citizens of Wayne? Bloomingdale, a town of about 7000 is about to have a full time mayor, yet Wayne does not.

I just hope the victims of the past floods remember what Vergano didn't do for them. While Dave Waks was in office. He was out there trying to comfort the victims. When they were flooded. No Mayor can stop the floods. But some Mayors showed some compassion to the victims. I use to be one of those victims.

I appreciate Mayor Vergano's service to the town. I did not realize he had been around for so long in so many positions. Nevertheless, there comes a time when a new face is needed. Considering Wayne's size and population, it is high time that we have a full-time Mayor, paid commensurately to make it worthwhile for a competent and motivated individual. As with the school board, it seems to me that party affiliation at the local level ought to be quite irrelevant; local issues are rarely, if ever, partisan or ideological in nature. At this point in our history, it is clear that something has to give. The town's finances are the no. 1 priority for most people it seems. Being in the private sector, I have been dismayed that all levels of government have been unrealistically resistant to the economic winds of change. Private sector no longer offers job security, pensions or wildly rich benefits - so why should the public sector continue to do so? Why should a police officer with 25 years in be allowed to retire with a generous pension before they even turn 50 - when their physical ability to do the job is still intact? The fact is, we as residents either have to do more with less or just do with.....less. There are many areas that could be cut or at least reduced. There has been no talk of these things in public at least. I will vote for Del Vecchio partially just for a change of scenery, but also hopeful that something can be done to cut costs.

Add a full-time chief executive's salary right to the top of the municipal payroll...to cut costs? How will that work?... drop the BA and all the department Directors?
Sounds like a plan.

@Frank Gallagher, We have one of the best BA'S in the area. He has saved this township a lot of money. With the cuts he has made and the Grants he has found. You can't blame him for the salary the police force gets. The Chief of police and Captains are paid a higher salary then he is.

OK...but the only way to "have a full-time Mayor, paid commensurately" and "something can be done to cut costs" is to drop the BA and some of the directors.

The two largest expenses in the town are the school and the police force. Makes sense and most would agree are our most important resources. Nevertheless, there seems to be incredible waste in the schools while class sizes are going up. There must be a way to run the schools more efficiently, and I wish the BOE had hired a superintendent with top credentials from a top school system. Perhaps we skeptics will be proven wrong. I am going to keep a close eye on these issues going forward. But I was stunned to learn that the budget for salaries increased by $2.2 million from last year - which reeks of inappropriate administrative hiring. Seems hard to believe that this amount could be due to school staff cost of living increases. I bet there are a lot more financial boondoggles lurking in that budget. I am all for spending the top amount possible on the schools, provided they are teaching the skills to prepare them for the future, which means spending on science, math and software skills primarily. I suspect a lot of money is going to waste in places people don't realize or that aren't transparent. In the meantime, at the township level, there has to be some programs which can be eliminated, reduced or combined. I'd like to hear a detailed plan from Del Vecchio outlining HOW spending will be curtailed and where she thinks priorities lie. Sadly, Vergano and the town council have not articulated any such measures and probably need to be reviewed and replaced.

The Republicans will soon be busy planting roses in order to use the peddles as a walkway for the annointed Chris Vergano as he makes his way to the chair protecting the Golden Egg. But in the shadows, our newly announced mayoral candidate is also busy, making friends with "other" mayors in surrounding towns such as Pompton Lakes, Peaquannock, Little Falls and Totowa, Faifield and West Paterson. Her ambitions are different. She sees the value in compromise, as her future is dependent on trust and loyalty.
Personally I think it would be fun to have a Democrat Mayor rowing in the same boat along with a mostly republican town council and school board. I look forward to her slamming the planning board for just the thought of entertaining 7-11 moving into the Preakness Chevrolet property, and will applaude her for finalizing the rebirth of the Wayne Hills Mall property, and the buy-outs of the properties of Wayne Dodge, Maroon Kia, and others along the river that seem to be on the secret " not on the buy-out " list.
These are only some of the tasks that can be ful-filled by a stranger, because friendships get in the way.
Still, I like Chris. I've known him since kindergarten. He's honest, he's sincere, and reminds me a lot of the guy on Mooshiner's- the one that makes George Washington's Secret Recipe.

Here's the link to kenneth Del Vecchio's wikepedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenneth_del_Vecchio
If you've got Cablevision/Optimum, he's got a movie On Demand right now, "An Affirmative Act", a pro-gay marriage courtroom drama starring Charles Durning and some others.
Del Vecchio's background is beyond impressive. There's certainly nobody like him in Wayne. The word on him though is that he can be very tough to deal with and has a gigantic ego, though I've heard at the same time that he's the nicest guy and charming. More important is that his wife (who is the one running for mayor) by all accounts is a lovely lady with an equally impressive background, with an Ivy league doctorate, being a college professor, and working in producing roles in her husband's films and with his film festival. Here's the link to her IMDB page: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1570281/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1
She seems to be a very strong woman with a host of accomplishments where she's no career politician, and somebody who won't get pushed around by political bosses because she has an entirely separate successful set of careers. This seems to be much more of the type of person who we need to lead Wayne. The Del Vecchios may be a power couple with major Democrat ties but they're certainly not local yocal politicians with personal political agendas.

Preventing Outages During Major Storms Could Call for Tree-Trimming Party
Many local residents and officials complain bitterly when the utility comes in and cuts back trees that are decades old. At a forum in December, Ralph LaRossa, president and chief operating officer of Public Service Electric & Gas, recalled a local official showing him a finger and telling him not to cut any limb larger than that.
Lawmakers are trying to address the problem by introducing a bill (A-3654) in the Assembly to give utilities more authority to trim trees.
Under the bill, no shade-tree commission could interfere with or restrict a utilities’ ability to conduct tree-trimming work. “Making sure our trees and shrubs are properly maintained around energy infrastructure is quite simply common sense,’’ said Assemblyman John Curran (D-Essex), a sponsor of the bill, which was approved by the Assembly Telecommunications and Utilities Committee earlier this month.
Assemblyman Wayne DeAngelo (D-Mercer), a cosponsor of the bill, agreed. “We can and should do better,’’ he said. “This bill is sensible.’’

The NEW Info for the Action Planning Session is:
DATE: Wed March 19, 6:30PM
PLACE: Morristown Library*, 1 Miller Road in Morristown
Ground floor (basement) Public Meeting Room
*Please note that this is the TOWN Library across South Street from the Community Theatre and not the big County Library in Whippany.
As many of you discovered when trying to RSVP, there was a much larger than expected interest in this meeting. While this is a great development for the prospects of having some meaningful activity in our area, we couldn't fit everyone in the location I reserved for tonight. Since we want everyone possible to be able to participate in the development of OFA from the beginning, I found a larger location but also had to change the date to accommodate everyone
The meeting is now on Wed March 20, at the Morristown Library, and the new information is posted here:

Senate leaders reject Diane Feinstein legislation for assault weapons. Reid claims he couldn't get 40 votes. Funny, there are more than 40 Dem Senators aren't there? "They warn Democratic senators who vote to kill one of President Obama’s biggest priorities will suffer political repercussions." So, its not about safety that the Dems preach, it's about getting re-elect.
