Is Wayne Hills Coach Olsen Looking To Leave Wayne?
Coach's five-bedroom house is up for sale as deadline looms.
Revered Wayne Hills football coach Chris Olsen has put his family's Foxboro Road home up for sale, as the eight-time state champ faces a deadline to decide whether to remain coach or athletic director.
The house, which was built in 1998 and is in the Point View Estates section of town, has an asking price of nearly $740,000.
Olsen did not return messages seeking comment.
The Board of Education approved a policy in January prohibiting administrators and supervisors from coaching sports teams or acting as advisors of any district athletic, co-curricular or extra-curricular program.
Olsen must decide by July 1 which position -- if any -- he wants to keep.
His son, Kevin, who quaterbacks the Hills team and has been recruited by some of the top college football programs in the country, has said that he would not play his senior season if his “father, coach and best friend” is not coaching.
The Board said in November that it would address such conflicts after nine Wayne Hills High School football players were charged with aggravated assault after they allegedly attacked two Wayne Valley High School students Oct. 29.
Olsen has received criticism for not suspending the players for the first two rounds of the state sectional playoffs last year. Dozens of people, however, expressed their support for Olsen to retain both titles at a board meeting earlier this year.
“It’s a well-maintained home with a gorgeous view in a popular section of town,” said realtor Bob Lindsay said. He declined further comment.
According to a listing on Lindsay’s website, the house is a five-bedroom colonial with an elevated deck, master bedroom suite with Jacuzzi, and a finished basement with a recreation room. Pictures of the house’s interior show several football jerseys hanging in one of the bedrooms and in the recreation room.

I am all for a local website to discuss town issues, but this smacks of papparazzi-like stalking. Whatever Olsen's faults may be, I don't believe it is appropriate to report on his every move, especially when it may affect the sale of his house. This is not news and it may be harmful to his property value if everyone knows he is selling and why he is leaving town. Please do the right thing and give the man some privacy. remove this article at once. This is going too far. If he isn't leaving for his own reasons, stuff like this surely will drive him out. It shouldn't be this way.

Wayne's World. They have to do this. Everyone stopped commenting on the previous articles. If you notice, everytime they post an article about this man, both sides get in heated debates, logging on to this site every hour to respond. The activity died down on the previous post, so it was time to start a new one.

WW, I will respectfully disagree. Olsen is a public figure in Wayne, and has led its football team to eight state championships. He is currently in the news because of a dispute with the town over whether he can remain coach and athletic director. I'm sorry, but if he is looking to leave the town or the district, then that is news in Wayne. We don't know if he is, but the question does need to be asked considering the recent history and the climate surrounding the football program.

Albert, that would never factor into the decision about whether a news story has merit or not. Do people read stories about Olsen, Wayne Hills football and the recent controversies? Absolutely, sure. But each story must still be judged on its own merit, and we believe this rises above that bar.

He couldn't afford the exorbitant increase in the property taxes. I don't blame him.

Maybe he has a better offer elsewhere, I am surprised he hadn't moved into college and professional arena before this.
Although the property tax mentioned would be reason enough to drive anyone out.

10 days ago i said here his house was on the market. 10 days ago i said he is looking into going to South Carolina where he has inquired about a "Private" school where is youngest son may finish out his high school career. Im sure its NOT the taxes, Im sure he's not looking to "downsize" either..Think outta the blue his son spewed "if my father don't coach, i might not play "...It's not the taxes that drive people out, its more like the politics that do....

I guess after all his years of preaching "teamwork", it really is all about him and his son. The football team was just being used to get his son a scholarship and now he is tossing the team aside. Those kids are completely disposable to him. I feel bad for the football players he is leaving behind. Even if he decided not to coach and keep the AD position, he still would have been able to supervise the team since the AD can attend any game or practice he wants to.

Tom - Although Olsen is a nominal public figure (and then only because of the controversy), the story about the sale of his home pertains to his private life, so I respectfully maintain that Patch is in the wrong on this one. The sale of his home has nothing to do with how he carries out his public function. If this becomes public knowledge and is used against him in a sale negotiation, he'd be right to be pretty steamed. Regardless of whether it is a liability issue for Patch, it would be the right thing to do to remove it. EWS already reported it but to do it officially like this just doesn't sit right. I enjoy Patch for being an interactive local forum but some things are best left alone.

Why would it affect the sale negotiation? I wouldn't worry about that.

okay, okay, let me see if I have this correctly then? If the team goes to the state championship with this ocach thats news, and if the cos=ach decides to go before the BOA to give his account of the recent situation where several team members were alleged to have been involved in a brawl, that even the national news sources covered, thats news.
But if the very same individual is selling his house that is not news worthy in a small town news source?

Stew - apparently you don't separate a man's public life from his private one. The things you mentioned were all done in his capacity as a coach and school official. I don't care for the way it all went down and was vocal about it on this forum; but disagreeing with someone or disliking them outright doesn't mean our principles should be compromised. Stew, with relentless critics like the ones that can be found on this board on virtually every topic, it isn't hard to see why accomplished and talented people don't want to be in the public eye. Let's stick to the issues....Olsen's public actions in his capacity as coach/administrator are fair game. His personal life ought to be off-limits.

are you guys kidding? Olsen loves the attention he is getting from this. his real estate agent actually was quoted in the article. This is a ploy and we are all supposed to get upset that we are losing our town hero. He is trying to teach this town and the BOE a lesson that he means business and he and his son will take their ball and go home if they dont get their way. I'm sure we will all survive without him here but i still highly doubt he leaves. Scare tactics are funny arent they?

In order to leave the sale would have to close, and there are very few sales happening, especially when property taxes are over the 10k mark. Property taxes have become a very real drain on the market, don't forget appeal date is April 1

Scondo, not to disagree with you, but since this past Sept to end of Feb. there were 199 CLOSED sales in Wayne. So in 5 months thats about 40 per month or more than 1 a day. Its not so much the taxes as it is the uncertainty in the job market. Wayne still continues to be stronger than most surrounding areas in home sales and always will be..With interest rates at or under 4% and prices down 8% in just the last 6 months its the perfect time to buy..Selling well thats another story. Wayne has the 2nd lowest tax rate in the county only behind Totowa. Wayne continues to be a place to live, Unemployment in Wayne is at 6.3% and the Schools still rank in the top 100 in the state. So home sales, yes are not what they once were during the boom, but are stronger than most other areas..Taxes here do NOT drive buyer away..Taxes although always on the upswing as they are everywhere else, continue to support the schools and that keeps Wayne in the top area's to buy..

If anything, it appears to me that Dan is very pro-Wayne Hills Football and Wayne Valley Football. Too much for my tastes, but many stories nonethless. By the way what are your body dimensions, out of curiosity. You point out Dan's, I would like to know yours.

I always wondered how teachers could afford Point View, especially if there was only one spouse working. Must have been an inheritance or money from other sources. There are many successful professionals who do not live in such extravagant homes.

Its not hard at all for a teacher to live in Point View. Tax records show that Olsen purchased the home in 1998 for 415K., With the sale of his previous home im sure he made out quite well. It seems it was a GOOD investment. Since that home now in Point View is on the market for 740k.. So say he made 100k profit on the previous home and has a 300k mortgage and surely he has refinanced to a good rate, so where is he at? Not hard to do at all and actually smart..

You know, I thought the same thing. How do these poor under paid teachers afford to live in high tax areas? Coaches, as well as others, come and go. High school football is only a game that is played by students. High taxes are a serious problem, paid by adults. They should concentrate on reducing taxes and by this I mean reducing the school budget. If he wants to move let him go.

You know that when all is said and done, he was hired to coach and coach he did. Some coaches are measured by the seasons they stack up, others by the values they instill and others by their impact on their charges. I always was just a little bit proud of the achievements of Wayne Hills, although my children did not attend that school. Maybe, just maybe we should take some time to say thank you to the man and stop with all the nonsense.
