Seth Ruderman had to do something.

Ruderman, a Wayne resident, signed up to participate in the New York City Marathon on Sunday but decided not to participate in the marathon once Hurricane Sandy hit. He’s been training for the past six months by running around Packanack Lake.

“I just didn’t think it was the right time to run,” said Ruderman.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Friday afternoon the marathon was cancelled for the first time in its history due to the outcry from residents about reallocating police officers and generators to help run an athletic event.

Instead of touring the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy in the five boroughs, Ruderman will be collecting food, water, warm clothes, and blankets at his house Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ruderman lives at 20 Robin Hood Way.

Ruderman wants to fill five trucks with supplies. Each one would be given to a food pantry in each of the New York City’s five boroughs.

“The charities from the runs will still get their money but the residents, they don’t a thing,” Ruderman said. “At least we can give something back to people who really need help now.”
