Truck Crushes Car, 9 Taken To Hospital
Nine people were taken to area hospitals Monday afternoon after a truck flipped onto a car at the intersection of Hamburg Turnpike and Alps Road.

Nine people were taken to area hospitals Monday afternoon after a recycling truck flipped and landed on top of a car at the intersection of Hamburg Turnpike and Alps Road, Wayne Police said.
A recycling truck traveling east on Hamburg Turnpike made a hard right-hand turn onto Alps Road to avoid colliding with a Ford station wagon that was turning left onto Alps Road, said Capt. Mark McGrath.
The truck hit the station wagon and landed on top of a Honda Accord, pinning the driver and a passenger inside, McGrath said. It also hit a Toyota Camry.
The driver and the passenger had to be extracted from the vehicle. Their heads were immoblized with neck braces and they were placed on stretchers.
McGrath said all nine people involved in the crash were take to either St. Joseph's Wayne Hospital and St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson.
"None of the injuries appeared to be life threatening," McGrath said.
Nancy Collins, director of public relations for the St. Joseph's Healthcare System, would not provide an update on the conditions of those taken to the hospitals.

or maybe some smooth pavement. ....did you ever try to brake on hamburg tpke heading towards paterson just before the alps intersection? it is all rippled and it is very tough to control your vehicle there, especially applying brakes.

I know... the road is so bad over there! They did everything so nicely up by Jackson Ave, but just stopped as it heads towards Alps.

Why did the station wagon pull out in front of the Dumpster? It is not that easy to brake a truck, especially on these rough roads

Very rough road at that intersection. I pass it every morning. Problem is that everyone tries to beat the lights. That intersection was designated to have a turn around jughandle but they spend the money else where on unnessary projects. I believe this is the county work?

Thank god the injuries are not life threatening. Why cant the county improve that interesction and traffic lights like they did with alps & ratzer? Instead they waste their time with jackson & hamburg which wasnt needed.

Dan you do a great job on reporting Wayne news. This is a scary photo. I saw the truck after it was righted up, very uncomfortable feeling when I think of how many times I've waited for the light to turn green at that same spot. What a traumatic experience for the people in the car, one minute sitting at the light...and the next....

How right you are Bob. The major issue is the vehicles traveling East and speeding up to get through the light as it turns yellow then red while there is a west bound vehicle sitting in the intersection waiting to turn South on Alps. On the other hand you have the people traveling East and making an illegal left turn on to the Alps Road Extension to go behind the shopping center.

The simplest solution to this intersection is each of the four directions gets it's own green light.

God was with those passengers. I can't believe people got out of that car alive. This could have been a lot worse. I believe this happend shortly before DePaul High School which is right down the block let out. If this happend only a short while after it would have been likely that the intersetcion would have been filled with students.
I was by that intersection shortly after it happend and the Wayne PD and EMS had the situation (and the traffic) under control. Both departments deserve a big THANK YOU.
