Patriots Win State Title On Late-Game Touchdown

Coach Chris Olsen: "What can I say about these kids. At halftime they said, ‘Coach we’re going to win this game’.”

EAST RUTHERFORD — The Wayne Hills football team, missing nine suspended players, scored 15 second half points to repeat as North 1, Group 3 state champions Saturday, by defeating Old Tappan 15-12 at The Meadowlands.

The game was a rematch of the 2010 final, in which the Patriots won on a last-second lateral.

“What can I say about these kids,” Wayne Hills Coach Chris Olsen said. “At halftime they said, ‘Coach we’re going to win this game’.”

Wayne Hills was without eight starters, but both quarterback Kevin Olsen and wide receiver Jeff Gignac expected to win, regardless of the circumstances.

“We have talent all around us. Just because we have nine guys down doesn’t mean we can’t win,” said Gignac, who had eight receptions for 140 yards and two touchdowns.

The Board of Education suspended nine players from extracurricular activities Nov. 25. The boys were charged with aggravated assault Nov. 9 for allegedly beating up two Wayne Valley High School students. An administrative law judge and the state’s acting commissioner of education upheld the suspensions this week.

Patriot fans said they were proud of the team for the character it showed late this season.

“These boys showed so much heart this week,” Donna Henry said as she cheered from the stands. “For them to not only win, but to come from behind the way they did, it was just incredible. They should be very proud of themselves.”

Gignac caught the game-winning touchdown in the corner of the end zone with 3:05 remaining in the game, as Wayne Hills drove 89 yards.

“It was a counter pass,” said the 6-foot-5 Gignac. “I ran to the right—nothing was there. I scrambled back, jumped over Devin [Fuller] and just caught it. I knew I had to step up for my team and that’s what I did.”

Kevin Olsen spoke highly of the receiver.

“He’s been around all year,” Olsen said of Gignac. “I guess he was waiting for the biggest game to make the biggest plays of his life.”

Old Tappan started from its own 27 on the possession following the Hills touchdown, but an intentional grounding penalty pushed the Golden Knights back to their own five.

On third and four, Old Tappan quarterback Devin Fuller fumbled for the second time, as Erik Moskal recovered the ball with 2:35 remaining.

Wayne Hills was held scoreless through the first half for the first time this season, down 12-0 at the intermission.

The Patriots struggled to contain quarterback Fuller, who rushed for 104 yards and both of his team’s touchdown, from 18 and seven yards out, respectively.

Wayne Hills opened the game with a three-and-out and punted on its first four possessions. Olsen was picked off on the fifth drive and threw an incomplete pass as time expired going into halftime.

The Golden Knights fumbled the ball four times in the second half and threw an interception.

Hills running back Dom Santoro (19 carries, 112 yards) got his team into opponent territory with a 43-yard carry on second and four.

Olsen completed 14 of 23 passes for 169 yards. He threw for one touchdown and one interception.

Congratulations Coach Olsen and the 2011 Wayne Hills Patriots. What a great display of class, perseverance and determination! How nice for the guilty of the 9 to see no one is bigger than the program and there is no substitute for hard work and preparation in the off season. If more programs worked half as hard as the Patriots they would start to see even the smallest measure of success rather than watching from the stands.

Its really a shame that such poor parents allowed this season and all the previous successes be dirtied by the selfish, self-centered and perhaps illegal activities of their little criminals.

Thanks for the nice comments at first but you kind of ruined it by calling the accused kids criminals. Seriously, if you really knew what went on that night you might change your tune. At the very least, could you please stop judging people.

@Phyllis Rec: Perhaps "criminals" is not exactly correct. But may I pose the question; "What do you call those who beat the two WV kids to such a degree that they required hospitalization?" You refer to "what really went on that night". Were the two WV kids beaten? Did they sustain injuries? Did they require medical attention? Being judgmental is one thing. Being "in denial" is another ... Name that tune.

Hills had a great, great second half. Three kids, #80, #21, #19 - tore it up in the second half and the defense came alive. Big interception, fumble recoveries - can't make those kind of mistakes and beat Hills.

Love it !!! They earned it. Very happy for the team.

Old Tappan's QB is really good, but you need more than one guy to beat a talented, well coached team like Hills.

Heading to the Outback. Cheers!

DJ-
Regardless of what people think of Coach Olsen, he is a good coach. People may not like who he is or what he does but he is a consistent winner. How many state titles has he won the past ten years? He is not the one that makes the schedule and he is not the one that decides what teams they play. I agree with you that they should play tougher schools like a St Joes and other NJ power house teams because you can not call yourself the best unless you beat the best.

jon krese,
thats where u are wrong,u have a few flex games in your schedule that u can go out and get tuffer teams to play..scheduling isnt like it use to be.numerous schools have done it this year.hawthorne ,lodi ,union city, west essex.{many others} and the regular ones don bosco ,bergen catholic and st joes... so if he thinks his team or all these people think he does a great job, start getting with the times and branching out..show how great your coaching and team is.instead of playing games against teams that have 1 good guy on it,they should play teams that have 11 on each side of the ball... to me sure its greta to win ,but id rather play dominate teams week after week .

S, I meant why would these teams ever play each other in a tournament of champions format. It's unfair for public schools, which can't recruit, to play parochial schools, which can recruit, to play each other, because 9 times out of 10, the parochial school will win. Tell me, S, how many times a playoff-qualifying public school beat a playoff-qualifying parochial school this season? I'd imagine the number is somewhere close to 0

DJ, Are you suggesting that it's a fair contest to pit public school districts whose rosters are limited to only those players who reside within the district against parochial schools that have the ability to build a roster comprised of the very best players from just about anywhere? So swallow your sour grapes and stop with your desperate, pitiful arguments over semantics... @John For once somebody (you) calls it what it is - a state SECTIONAL championship. It is the highest achievement that a football team can accomplish in NJ, and for the logistical reasons cited before, not practical to extend playoffs, unless they completely changed schedules. I would not be in favour of that - there's too many other sports and activities that our youth would be better off being exposed to.

In Indiana, EVERY school, regardless of record enters the playoffs! But the regular season starts in August and ends in the middle of October. And they still have 4 or 5 division (based on size of schools), but you can play up in size, if you want, and if there is room in the bracket. (and that is determined only every couple of years).

The Wayne Hills fans in the stands would like to thank the Wayne Valley Cheerleaders for cheering for Old Tappan above their own high-school coaches in the 2nd half. Besides DJ, who is ignorant, let us celebrate the win of a Wayne Hills team that demonstrated football is a team game. Devon Fuller is a star, but.....he fumbled more than once, he was beat in the end zone for the final touch down....and bottom line, wayne hills beat them. No tricks, nor run backs, just play by play. Old Tappan was a very good team. If you take out the early season losses without Fuller, and the Thanksgiving loss cause they were setting themselves up for this game, their record was great!

Everyone will always be divided on the issue at hand looking at it from a totally unbiased standpoint (don't live in WH, know no one there, no football connection there, etc) I believe everyone involved needs to share the blame for the controversy. Even though people will always disagree for different reasons, I don't think there is a need for name calling and personal attacks on people here. Despite the controversy, I believe in giving credit where credit is due. The boys from WH who played last night deserve ALL THE CREDIT for the win. They were down by 12 pts at the half. They had the heart to fight for the win, and they stayed focused throughout the game. That is what makes or breaks you in championship game. Good for them.

agree, with the possible exception of a school like Philipsburg, which geographically fits in well with Lehigh Valley, PA, since travel expenses would be less for them and they have their tradition thanksgiving game with Easton, PA (oldest or most played in the US, methinks). No type of Code of Conduct is going to ever change "Rivalry". Age or gender doesn't matter, because the pressure caused by intense competition is always going to boil over. It doesn't matter if it's in sports, politics, academic, or a simple game of chess.
What makes the conduct rules questionable is that they cannot be applied equally to all schools. For instance, in Wayne we are faced with multiple high-schools. The students start out playing "together" only to be divided into different competitive groups around the age of 12. From that point forward, they are forced into cempetition against those that were their friends the year before.
Many students are able to make the adjustments, and many can accept competing with someone on their "club team" as well being able to compete against the same person facing them on their high-school team. Students living in area's with a single high-school don't have the pressure of this challenge.
Maybe it's time we begin building junior high-school teams in athletics at both Wayne Hills and Wayne Valley, and reconfigure the programs like the Boys and Girls Club, the PAL, Senior Little League, and Wayne Rec. by setting the age cap at 12 years old.
The school district lines are set in stone not sand.
To say that Wayne is one big community is a lie. Everyone knows it, so why not use it to our "productive advantage".

Great job caoach Olsen for adapting to the loss of 3 high impact players who had to be replaced from the 9. As far as football he gets results and reloads & adapts at the half. He teaches the kids discipline and practicing till they get it right. For all you women that dont get it and it appears some men(who are not capable of playing) too football is the most intricate sport. Players just dont go out and hit each other and tackle, it is a physical chess game. Until you learn the came please just be quiet. Now lay off Olsen, his wife, football and let the court decide to handle these 9 players. Women & Mothers on these blogs you have seen what a great coach can do. Now stop complaining and maybe you can make your husbands happy!

Yes it is a chess game of sorts. However, no matter how good of a coach you are, you cannot give kids talent to play football. You either have it in you or you don't. It is obvious that the boys who played last night have the talent.

There cant be a state championship tiltle fot the best team in N.J. Schools like Bergen C, especially Don Bosco get kids from all over New Jersey and New York. They are just All star teams. Like the public schools parochial teams should just get kids from their town and lets see them compete and see how they are ranked then.

"Based on the Star Ledger interview and the e-mail to the parent who stood up to bully Olsen there are not to many Boards of Educations who would let this bully around any more kids. The sad thing about it I really don't think he realies how sick his thinking really is. That interview revealed so much about a very sad individual. The good people of Wayne Hills must do what they have to do to protect the student's. Congratulations to all the players who did the right thing and played there hearts out and showed that they could prevail during adversity. A major lesson in life. It will probably happen again to many of you during your life time and this experience will get you through a bad situation through hard work and doing the right thing you will come out on top most of the time."

THIS IS SO VERY TRUE!

Yes, agreed!

And let me say the boys played hard and won. I like that, especially after what they have been through. I do worry that their perception of morality (and character!) has been compromised though. Good football players without good family values are worthless in the long run as far as I am concerned. Much bigger loss.

Just to clarify. Those were NOT WV cheerleaders they were OT girls. WV & OT have the same warm ups with almost exactly the same colors & design. NO ONE other than the teams playing are allowed on the field. The WV coaches always promote good sportsmanship no matter who is playing. I have personally seen these girls in action& they are exactly what cheereleading is all about. Shame on you for spreading rumors without having any facts.

Wrong. too many fans witnessed this. Not that it matter's who a person roots for. Most of Wayne Valley and Depaul sat on Old Tappan's side anyway. Sorry, but they were WV cheerleaders. They weren't on the field, they were in the stands on the tier above the seats of some WH fans. I don't know what section, but it was even with the 25 yard line.

congrats to wayne hills and all the players who stepped up fopr the 10 especially jeff Gignac. such a good player and yet never on he field all year even when up by 48 against Vernon. Coach Olsen has to keep first team in all game. Shame coach olsen couldn do the right thing from day one. this victory changes nothing. Coach olsen needs to be shown the door. his handling of this situation was a disgrace. his interview said it all. its all about him no remorse and a legend in his own mind. just as penn state fired the legendary joe paterno, its time for wayne hills boe let olden go . his ego is too big. he teaches by intimidation, humiliation and bullying. Coach Olsen, a real legendary coach like Bob Hurley shows his players their mistakes, tells them to clean up and stay clean and uses sports as an activiy to keep them straight. you take players who do something wrong and ry to intimidate others so they can play. Please dont ever say you are legendary and yes your record speaks for itself, fighting with a coach, playing academicaly ineligible players, playing your under age son in a scimmage etc. ordering 60 young adult to wear heir football jerseys and try to intimidate the BOE. What a life lesson you taught these young man. Way to go coach Olsen. more credit to the young men who took the field and played their hearts out. some coach who takes all the credit. penn state fired joe Paterno, its time for Wayne Hills BOE to do the same to you. Wayne parent....just wondering where you get your information from...Are you the parent of a Wayne Hills Football player? Do you have any idea what you're talking about? Did you play for Coach Olsen? Is that how you know he teaches by intimidation, humiliation and bullying? You hide behind your anonymity and spew disparaging commentary about a man who has been passionately dedicated to instilling a winning spirit in the many student athletes who have been fortunate enough to call him coach over the last 25 years at Wayne Hills. In this day and age of celebrating mediocrity and political correctness run amuck, perhaps it has now become unpopular to be a winner. Perhaps simply by virtue of his consistent record of success, Coach Olsen upsets those that don't possess the will or the fortitude or the talent to win. The lessons of hard work, dedication, perseverance, loyalty and commitment to excellence that Coach Olsen has instilled in his players will serve those young men well in life. You cannot on the one hand congratulate and praise the young men of the Wayne Hills Football program for their wonderful success and on the other hand disparage the man and the program that lead them to that success. Winning is NOT a dirty word. The student athletes of the Wayne Hills Football program and Coach Olsen and his staff should be proud of and commended for their great achievement.

I don't have to wonder. The two teams Hills played prior to OT weren't nearly as good as OT. In fact, teams like this year's Vernon team shouldn't even be in the playoffs.

If the state ever decides to go to a playoff system that crowns a single state champion in each group, lesser teams won't be competing for it as they will cut down the number of teams making the playoffs - a good thing.

And, btw, Hills will win that too!

A win is a win, especially in the post season sectional championships. If Coach Olsen could have run up the score, he probably would have. However, with the team he was able to field, he beat them by three. Not too shabby. I've been adversarial towards Olsen and the 9, during this fiasco. However, you can't deny these kids who did a great job. They were behind 12-0 at the half and came back to overcome the deficit as well as holding them scoreless in the second half. That's character, tremendous passion to win, and true grit.

Olsen didn't make it a circus. The gutless wonders of the Wayne Board of Education made it a circus. Rather than uphold the possibly innocent students' rights to due process, they flip flopped back and forth as they tried to gauge public sentiment on this issue, ultimately sticking with the decision they found most politically expedient. Without all the facts, these politically-weak-willed hacks caved to the pressure of the mob mentality of their uninformed electorate rather than upholding the rights of accused students. They should all get thrown out of office... next election they will!

Some of the headlines found around our State reported of the Hills victory.

Bergen County Press reported: Rumors of if Hills lost Olsen would be fired and teeming up with Joe Clark for a duet and remake of Michael Jackson's,
It Don't Matter If You're Black Or White.

Some Passaic County press reported a collective sign of relief from all the cities in Passaic County. One resident who declined to be identified because of Olsen's history of letter writing said. We are so happy Olsen pulled that one out of his a$$. Now we can be all safe in knowing he will be promoted to Principle of Wayne Hills, and not coming here.

More Rumors could be heard from Essex County residents. The head of one of the local gangs who has a colorful history in North Bergen was overheard saying "Man that guy is being shafted like me, only I had to do 6 months for assaulting my second in command and he got off with a 1 year salary freeze for assaulting his assistant coach. Man I'm moving to Wayne.

Hey Taylor, Olsen is such a great resource for news stories. Take for example this literary gem as reported by D'Alessandro of the Newark Star Ledger. Mr.Olsen sent by e-mail to Mark Salviano, the Wayne Valley parent who was the only one who stood up to him at the Nov. 17 board meeting and asked about the coach’s callous need to put football ahead of discipline and hospitalized kids?
Mr. Olsen wrote:
"You are a coward in every sense of the word it is easy to run your mouth when u don’t know the facts it Email has made it easy for spineless people like you to attack and slander people I would love to speak with you face to face and review the facts"

So the AD and Coach of Wayne Hills HS sends out what can be construed by its tone, as being a veil threat with his "face to face" remark. I wonder what the BOE is doing with this one. I also wonder if he sent it from a school computer.

Another press report just came in.
From Atlantic City we heard rumors reported they were in the process of gathering letters written by Olsen to his fans. The purpose, to host a recital of letters which some have called "special invitations" by Olsen. Special efforts have been made to invite those who have been immortalized by Olsens pen. Or the computer these letters were written, and sent from. Further efforts were made to contact the Wayne BOE for a complete list of his works. Some residents and town leaders went so far as saying "That computer should be in bronze" But like so much of recent events in Wayne, there is no proof of any "special invitations" in writing. We do know of one letter that asked for a "nose to nose" invitation but nothing "special" That was declined do to strict Wayne Township health codes.

Typical blame it on someone else. You are obviously a football parent or former football parent who still stands on the sidelines even though your kid graduated. 9 players charged with third degree aggravated assualt. it wasnt them. its the police, its the BOE, maybe the sun got in their eyes. If the police charged them wrongly, why arent the attorneys spending their time trying to get the charges drop instead of parading into superior court so they can play a football game. not bad enough that they are charged with assualt, but they have to continue their rowdy behavior and disrespect a teacher and then blow a air horn in a teacher's face and cause her to have problems with her sight. But it wasnt their fault. it was her fault right. hey if they can leave two kids lying in the gutter and be told its not their fault whats the big deal abut blowing an air horn into a teacher's face. Coach Olsen will protect them. Perfect oppurtunity for Olsen to teach them about respect, morality, and humility. Instead He will get the football parents to support them. No problem. As for Olsen and his ability to win. Need you forget his full time position is Athletic Director. His job is to teach and educate. If he wants to be solely judged on his wins, go get a real full time football coach job. Also I guess these atheltes only learned from coach olsen in their careers. none of their other coaches have ever taught them anything. No i dont have any kids so i am not a football parent.

Wait... so your handle is "Wayne parent" but you have no kids? Hmm... Thats interesting... I am a “Wayne parent” which means I do have children & they attend Wayne Public Schools. For the record, my kids do not & have not played football at WHHS. As I suggested in my response to your earlier diatribe, the problem with this whole fiasco is people hastily posting hearsay as fact & allowing their gut emotions to cloud their judgment when they are not close to & don't have the facts of the case. I am NOT suggesting that any individual found guilty of a crime be let off the hook. I am simply a proponent of allowing the system to work. Once all the facts have been gathered and processed, punishment MUST be rendered & those who are guilty MUST be held accountable for their actions. However, even the BOE in its decision admitted that due to the ongoing investigation, the Wayne PD did not release any info to them nor did they disclose to the BOE on what grounds charges were filed against these students. So without the facts at their disposal it would seem to me that the BOE was not in a position to pass judgement on these kids. When the facts are all in & some of the 9 suspended players are vindicated of any wrong doing, how do you propose we give them back the opportunity to play in the game they diligently prepared for all their lives? A more measured response, based on the facts available at the time the decision was to be rendered would have better served the cause of justice.

Frank, I didn't say it didn't happen... I simply stated that the spirit week pep rally is not specifically a football event and what went on at the rally was not driven by Olsen or by the football team as you clearly imply. For that reason I concluded that you were either ill informed or purposefully disseminating misinformation. For Spirit Week at WHHS, each class, (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior) selects a name/theme for their grade...(this by the way, was done well in advance of the incident on Urban Club Road on 10/29) At the spirit week pep rally there is a healthy and robust sense of class spirit in support of your own grade. in a good natured but spirited manner, Seniors boo juniors, juniors boo sophomores, everyone boos the freshmen, etc. This year the Junior Class selected the name/theme "Purple Police". The booing or "chorus" as you put it ,was directed at the Junior Class (not the Wayne PD) by the entire remaining student body of WHHS. The football team had nothing more to do with this than the rest of the student body and animosity toward the Wayne PD had nothing to do with this. In an effort to indict the football program and crucify Olsen, you, sir, presented a very warped version of the FACTS.

BY KRISTIE ACKERT AND ANTHONY MCCARRON DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITERS
Wednesday, January 28, 1998
Chris Olsen, the football coach of perennial power Wayne Hills, was flagged by the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association for allegedly using his 11-year-old son in a practice and employing two uncertified volunteer coaches.

Olsen, who did not return calls to the Daily News, is expected to fight a proposed five-game suspension in front of the NJSIAA Executive Committee Feb. 18.

Jim Loper, associate director of the NJSIAA, said four charges against Olsen were brought before the association's controversy committee by Ronald Bligh, one of Olsen's former assistants and now a wrestling coach at Bergenfield High School.

The NJSIAA's controversy committee recommended that Olsen be suspended from the opening of football practice through the fifth game of the season. If Olsen leaves Wayne Hills, the suspension will apply if he is employed at any NJSIAA school in the future.

John,
I, nor any level headed person for that matter have never come out and SAID any or all the "11" kids are guilty or innocent. That is the point your missing. The court of LAW will ultimately decide their fate. What we and the courts to date have said time and time again is that when it comes to extra-curricular activities it is an obvious privilege that can be "stripped"and "taken away" given the circumstances. For a sad minority of ill informed adults to indignantly "hide behind" and challenge "due process" in order to play a high school football game is absurd and down right "UN-AMERICAN". Ask the general population outside of your football bubble at Wayne Hills how the "world" views this story. You may be shocked at how SHALLOW your perception is being perceived.

Frank, I fully understand that the courts will ultimately rule on these charges and that school extracurriculars are a "privilege". Neither of those simple facts are beyond my grasp. Those facts, however, do not relieve school administrators or the BOE from acting responsibly when it comes to granting or denying individual students said privileges. Apparently it is your opinion that it's ok for a few innocent students to get hurt if they happen to be the collateral damage of an effort to ensure that the guilty get expeditiously punished. That just doesn't seem fair or productive to me. If or when some of the nine suspended players are found to be innocent of the charges against them, what will the BOE say to them then? Ooh, Sorry? You trivialize the punishment of being suspended from "just a high school football game" as if these students haven't invested years of dedicated time, effort, sweat and sacrifice to get to play at that level. Clearly you haven't similarly invested of yourself in any worthwhile endeavor or you would likely not be so quick to trivialize others hard work and dedication. And for the record I DO NOT reside in the Wayne Hills High School Football bubble you refer to. I have no horse in this race. I'm simply a proponent of fairness, even when its unpopular or politically inexpedient.

If you had children and your children had ever invested time, effort and dedication toward a discipline they were passionate about, you most certainly would not think it was ok to have it unfairly taken away on the basis of erroneous allegations. You both have shown your true colors in your assertion that because I don't walk in lock step with your misguided views, that somehow I am of no societal value....very typical of your ilk...When others express points of view that differ from your own, you are quick to dismiss them as ignorant or valueless. John, now that you have stooped so low to attack me personally, I will tell you that yes, I am a parent, and yes, a parent of a son who plays varsity football. He and I know the rules of the team and the school. My son was brought up to accept responsibility for his actions, regardless of how stupid or serious they are. If he were involved in such an incident, I would pull him from the game myself, before the coach could get to him. If the grades of our players are too low, they are suspended, if they mouth off on the field, they are suspended. They are brought up to have integrity and respect for their school, their coaches and their teammates, hence, they are expected to uphold a fine reputation. Opinions are just that, opinions, but when someone presents me with black and white facts, I am able to take them into consideration even though I may not like them. I suggest you do your research on the Board of Ed HIB policies and codes of conduct although based on your comments I feel that you are a person who just cant accept certain rules.

I find it sad that so many here miss the point entirely, not just of this incident, but the point of life itself. Do you honestly believe that people were jealous of the football success of Wayne Hills to the extent of lying and smearing the reputation of these nine players? Most good people were appalled by the behavior and also the wrong-headedness of the adults who allowed them to get away with it. There was no jealousy, that's silly to believe.

I have never been prouder as a parent than when my daughter told me that she had a new friend, and that she talked to the girl because she saw that others weren't. That speaks to a good heart. Am I proud when she does well in school? Not really, that speaks to an innate ability. Morality is taught and being a good person is taught. If your child excels in a sport or academics, it's a good thing, but take pride when you see them do something good or treat someone well.

Please think about the things that will last. I'd venture to say that the students at Wayne Valley that you think are so jealous barely know that the game was played, much less who won the game. Those you think are consumed by jealousy probably care much less than you project on them. If this one game is the high point of anyone's life at 17 or 18 years of age, that makes me sadder than even the stupidity of the comments of the past few weeks.

Truthseeker The joy of accomplishing something as a team is a wonderful thing to experience. The Wayne Hills Football team dedicated time, energy and hard work in order to accomplish yet another victory. Why is it so hard to say "good job we are proud of what you accomplished"? So much negativity toward students who worked hard and achieved their goal. I don't understand how a tremendous and hard earned victory can be construed as a bad thing by so many people.

Agreed Bill Brennan! And YES the people who are making EXCUSES as to why these boys had an unbelievable victory ARE jealous! The Wayne Hills Football team deserved this, and to go to the extent as to make excuses as to why they won and say that Fuller gave Wayne Hills the game is UNBELIEVABLE!!! Why in the world would Fuller - an amazing athelete - give up the State Title, a state ring, AND have his last pass be an intersection because he wanted to give Wayne Hills the title? Funny. BE PROUD OF THESE BOYS! This couldn't have been a more amazing victory for them!

It seems the vast majority of comments are not Wayne Hills bashing at all. They are incredulously disappointed and appalled at the coaches disregard for his obligation to discipline the actions of his players who were arrested for a felony. And gfor the BOE's embarrassing back and forth waffling. I mean who does that? the whole thinkg was so ridiculous it made national news who made fun of us (Wayne)! And lets not forget the nine boys and their parents are still suing the BOE. What nerve! Wayne is supposed to start healing with that still looming? Jeesh.

The remaining players won the title without the nine arrested for a felony. Now that is poetic justice. And just a feel-good job well-done. I see very little on here wishing the remaining players ill will. Thats a deliberate spin.

We need to heal Wayne--just as soon as I am done with my character assassinations of a Coach who many in Wayne think a great deal of. We need to congratulate those Hills players on an awesome victory--but first let me finish wripping the culture of their football program and calling for it to be dismantled. To win the North 1 Group 3 State championship was truly an outstanding accomplishment to the team without 8 of their starters. It displayed teamwork, discipline, leadership and the will to win. Congratulations to Hills for their performance. Also, the ability of Mr. Cignac to rise to the occasion and turn in an amazing performance was incredible. I must state, it did take leadership from the coach and his staff to guide the team to the title. As a parent and former athlete, I still hold a firm position that the coach, acting as a role model, should have taken some disciplinary action before the Vernon game and all the name calling and negativity on the Patch would be vastly diminished. I must admit that I, a Hills Grad from the 70's, "put a face on OT". What a mistake! I hope now that due process will continue it's course and healing can take place. Let us all re-focus on major issues Wayne has to deal with; Flooding, High Taxes, The need for effective Leadership, etc.
Best to All!

I can't picture any of the high-school coaches doing anything differently in our years of playing. If the same situations were handed to coach Polito, or coach Gifford, at Wayne Hills, believe the outcome would have been the same. The only thing that I can see that is different is the students "today" seem to get a kick out of bashing each other's schools, coaches, and programs.
Because of the league re alignment, all 3 Wayne teams were thrown into the same bucket, which has to be very confusing in itself. Not because they're competing aganist each other, because they are 3 separate programs, competing for the same "town" prize. The students are earning the awards for themselves and their schools, and people standing on the sidelines are screaming that the prizes reflect the entire town, not just one part of it.
We're showing up with 1 book and expecting 3 students to share it at the same time, in 3 different corners of the class room. At some point, of course they're going to fight over it, especially when we tell them only the highest test score get's the award. Eliminate the problem. Put Wayne Hills back in the NBIL.

The NBIL doesn't exist anymore.

If the BOE were to manipulate the enrollments, then WV & WH would be placed in different groups and would not meet in football. WV is the largest Group 3 in their section, just 24 students short of of the smallest Group 4 school.

But, if WV was bumped up to G4, then they could end up playing Bosco and Bergen.

It is sort of difficult to focus on "the need for effective leadership" when the nine players arrested for a felony are still suing the Board of Education.

I also think that most of the name-calliong on the Patch postings were done by the Olsen suppposrters toward the ppl outraged over the behavior of the BOE, Coach and adults in the matter displaying poor leadership and refusal to do the right thing.

Frank & S - well said and you both should proud of your children and your moral character. Michael - well said - the coach should have taken disciplinary steps prior to the Vernon game if he trulty is a role model rather than order his players to storm the BOE meeting dressed in jerseys. Clearly an act of intimidation. If he had, there would be more positive postings and the victory over OT so much sweeter for the kids who deserved the victory. Unfortunately, Coach Olsen will never learn and his time needs to end just like Joe Paterno. Wayne Hills deserves better and so do the kids

John, I have looked at the matter of so-called collateral damage you have proffered in your opinion. And I am happy to report the result was, nine players were given an opportunity to play they would not have had otherwise. Nine players and a team learned they could win without the so-called A-Team. The team benefited from new stars that could shine and players that would otherwise never been given a chance to play in a Championship game. With that said, Mr. Olsen has a history of only playing his stars, and running up scores to destroy the opposition. A review of 10 victories this season will find PF 377- PA 73, excluding the one Non public school game and the State Championship on Saturday. It also is important to note how classy it was to defeat the rival HS team 41-0, and Eastside 48-0 ( no axe to grind at Eastside I'm sure) Now normally I would agree with such a strategy in War, but this is HS football.

So, I now offer another grassy knoll conspiracy as to why Mr. Olsen always keeps his stars on the field, and run the scores up unnecessarily.
It can be argued because his son is in the quarterback position there is a personal benefit to have a resume of TD’s and hundreds of yards passing. However perception is reality and Mr. Olsens history of promoting his sons can be found in a past ruling against him by the NJSIAA. In Mr Olsens own words "I let my heart lead my heart that day

Just another conspiracy theorist at work,

WH only scored 7 pts in the 2nd half vs WV, and 14 pts in 2nd half vs Eastside.

How could the coach have shown more class? By taking a knee in the 2nd half, or not trying to tackle the opponent...allowing them to score?

That would be demeaning, you can't disrespect an opponent like that. Your opponent expects and deserves your best effort, regardless of the score.

@dude - people who haven't coached in these situations don't know the difference between scoring a lot of points, and running up the score. You don't have a lot of options - so you run plays, nothing crazy, the other team has to make tackles - not a lot to expect from a football team - plus, in HS, the clock runs once the lead is 35 or more to mitigate the situation somewhat.

I've had Coach Olsen as a teacher&walked the hallways of Wayne Hills. I've had football players in my classes& can say from personal experience that Olsen teaches those boys to self serving, arrogant, pompous assholes. He thinks he is invincible & teaches his players that they are the same. That they are above everyone else. They are above the system & the rules don't apply to them. This isn't a matter of winning or losing. It goes beyond that. Its how they act when they win thats the problem. They act like its pro football. Seriously, YOU ARE IN HS. GET OVER IT. This isn't the superbowl. I'm not saying its not an honor to get to play the game, if you've worked hard to get where you are. I understand what others have said about political correctness & how winning has been demonized. I don't mean to criticize in that way. Its not even about the games anymore. Its not about the football. Its about the behaviour OFF the field. To have to hear about my school on the 6 o'clock news is a humilliating experience for me & I wasn't even involved in what happened. For a school that prides itself on excellence that is truly a far cry from it. The worst part is to not even show remorse. These kids aren't sorry for what they did, they're just sorry they got caught. Olsen is the adult & instead of trying to sweep this under the rug "Mr.Discipline" should have made sure his boys learned from the experience. But once again his players are too good for that. They are above the rules.

I don't necessarily think I can speak for a group that large. I think that most would agree that there is more to Wayne Hills than just football & athletics. We're more than that. We've got great clubs & student run organizations who's funding was cut to make room in the budget for said athletics. I'm also pretty certain no one enjoys the fact that people now think we're a bunch of discipline cases. Despite popular belief, though the rivalry is all in good fun we don't hate Wayne Valley students. Most of us have friends that go there & don't like the fact that this conflict has made the alleged rivalry more apparent to outsiders.

UT O !!! The cloud of controversy is slowly becoming a shadow of doubt. An eye-witness states "45 kids" fighting in the street. Police arrive to find only 2. One laying on the ground unconscious, and the other giving a description of 9 Wayne Hills suspects.
Remember: Both Joseph Afflitto Jr. and Police Chief John Reardon have teamed up before in an attempt to cover allegations regarding a complaint of harassment and impersonating a police officer, filed by Mr. Robert Burke ; owner of Wayne Auto Spa.
Im sure Joseph Afflitto Jr's "account of what transpired is more dramatic than what actually happened".
Bob Burke has recently been approved for a "Bladeless Wind Turbine" which is on the same lines as arresting suspects that weren't even at the fight involving "45 kids".
Police Chief Tom Reardon needs to put away his cape and magic wand. Rabbits only pop out of top hats when you hide them in there before the show starts.

So Jessica when did you take that head count? So by my count we are 34 suspensions short!!!

As for the wind turbine, a rumor reported Olsen objected to the outcome of the vote. It seems a certain Coach has been blowing wind up everybody's @$$ in Wayne for a number of years already. The BOE heard from 60 suited football players who all stood up at attested to a strong wind they felt around their HS everyday. One player added whenever the wind blew, we had to inhale deeply. It was also reported one player submitted a letter anonymously, he wrote: After one practice session 2 players were found unconscious, a strong methane odor was detected at the time. It was reported to police and still under investigated. However 9 suspects were believed to be the source. Attorneys for those under investigation repeated that they are innocent, and were of state at the time of the gas release. The Coach supporting the release of all gases, later emailed a concerned citizen.
"You are a coward in every sense of the word it is easy to run your mouth when u don’t know the facts it Email has made it easy for spineless people like you to attack and slander people I would love to speak with you face to face and review the facts"

The concerned citizen declined the meeting stating "Maybe a new wind turbine is just what we need right now"

I hope at the very least, Olsen is removed from his AD position. I don't mean this on a personal level, strictly on an educational model of what I believe is right. I strongly believe holding both positions is a conflict. If one half of the stuff posted on this blog is true, maybe he needs to be looked at very closely. Tell you this, Beckerman, the WH principle doesn't appear to have the balls to corral this guy. Let's see what kind of stones the BOE has in how they deal with Olsen. Honestly, I have no confidence in this Board and think they should all be removed.

Ok... so I know that the agenda of many of those that comment here is to disparage & destroy Chris Olsen and portray the football team as a bunch of arrogant thugs who think they are above the law. I get that & I've come to the conclusion that it's not worth attempting to make a legitimate, logical argument engaging people who have an agenda & an axe to grind. I am, however perplexed at the complete absence of anyone's outrage over the fact that this altercation took place largely as the result of a teen house party run amuck. There are parents in our community who apparently think its perfectly alright to allow their kids to host parties where alcohol flows freely among their underaged guests. There are homes where this goes on often... where the "PARENTS" either turn a blind eye to or are complicit in the illegal activities that go on under their roofs. As a parent of 2 teenaged kids who attend Wayne Public schools, I must say that I for one am outraged about THIS. How about someone suggesting that these type of "PARENTS" act more responsibly? How about someone suggesting that "PARENTS" like this quit enabling their own and others kids to behave badly and make bad choices while under the influence of drugs or alcohol? Police Chief Reardon, why is it that the names of the homeowners who hosted this party on Urban Club Rd. haven't been released to the media? Why haven't THEY been charged with anything? I guess money and relationships can buy you a lot of things...

IS HE KIDDING? There were 2 sides in that game WAYNE vs OLD TAPPAN, the god damned Mayor i supposed to be on the side of his town. Just when these people can't seem any lower they dig deeper go lower and embarrass us further.

An escort to the stadium is a matter of pride and support for the home team, they already suspended the "suspects" from the game, what was the point of disrespecting the players who no one has even accused? The only point made was - spineless and incompetent fools are running our community.

You can't get the cops to escort our champions but have no problem sending another code enforcement officer to my house. You are not going to stop me from saying what everyone else seems afraid to say and I have no intention of saying whatever I think will win an election. Bill, I'm sure the Wayne Police Department had it reasons for not providing an escort. It certainly is a question that needs to be asked and answered. We can speculate that an escort could be misconstrued in any number of ways. Perhaps it was nothing more than maintaining a level of impartiality in a time of controversy.

Bill, I agree with you as well. Just doesn't make any sense! Is Vergano a Valley graduate?

Getting a police escort to and from the stadium is a Wayne Hills tradition and the Wayne PD should be upset with themselves knowing that the didn't believe in the team.

@Darlene Tanis-Noonan-

I have not flip flopped at all on the issues at hand here. What I did do is merely agree with John when he pointed out parents "hosting" drinking parties should also take the heat!
So please, go and take your cheerleader "rah- rah" Coach Olsen "pom poms" elsewhere. We need more courageous role models like Nicole Cakir to stand up for moral values and common decency and make their voices heard. Enough with your
"Screw um!! WE won without them too!!" attitude, do you not hear how ignorant you sound? Have some class... help find solutions for the problems that exist.

Wow.. 911 call released... 45 kids now... Olsen... Your lucky the whole wasn't suspended!

“I don’t know if they are having a party or something but there is about 45 kids fighting in the middle of the road,” the caller says. “There’s cars flying by … Someone’s going to get run over.”

As for the parent complaining that the police dept didn't escort them to met life... They don't cave into bullying... Maybe if your boys didn't chant F%#k THE POLICE at the pep rally they would have done it. This is truth ... It was entered and published into record during the newark hearings... Nice morals you teach your kids! BRAVO

Willy. Cave into bullying? The police escort to a championship game is a tradition. The players who went to that game had nothing to do with the incident (If you recall the 9 arrestees were suspended from the game).

The alleged "chant" had nothing to do with law enforcement, the HS set up spirit week and held a competition between grades. The juniors were the Purple Police. The only teacher to testify about the incident said is was not a chant and had ZERO to do with the incident. On top of that NO ONE SAID IT WAS THE FOOTBALL TEAM WHO EVEN yelled the lyrics to that song.

You should be more concerned that someone misled an OAL Judge in order to achieve a result.

Perhaps if you read and comprehended everything Frank has written to date, you would come to a different conclusion. Instead you post tweets, which are nothing more than short burst of inconsequential information.

Darlene......for someone who told us to get a life Re: our posting on this site, I see that you weighed in twice more. This is my perogative to weigh in here and voice my opinion. I will continue on here as long as I enjoy doing so. I do have a life by the way. I have a wonderful wife, children, grandchildren. I am self employed and do work very hard as well as giving my time to other charitable organizations. So, I do have a life, a wonderful one. I will use this forum to advocate for change where in my opinion, I feel it is needed. Just sayin!

Yes, that email you received from the Wayne Valley Football Booster Club, originally went out only to the football families for help, but when the good people of Wayne, who CARE MORE about 3 boys that have suffered devastating loss in the past 6 months, than Hills winning a championship game, asked to have it sent around so they could help! They didn't need the mayor to do it and I resent you bringing it up on this forum, unless it's to help! There are MORE important things in life and in Wayne than a football game!!!!

No problem Pat-count me in. As long as the unity that is expected for one, is the same that should be expected for all. Would the same gifts be offered for a defense lawyer for any of the accused at Wayne Hills ? I don't think so !
A present, we have families on both sides of town asking for help and understanding. For different reasons of course, but the pleas are the same. Yet the decisions to offer are met with different reactions.
Your saying that "only the football families were asked" was nonsense. I was informed my the Lacross booster club first, and I don't have any children in Wayne Schools.
You resent my post, but not your own.
I donate to all Wayne Booster Clubs not just yours. and by the way, my chidlren are home-schooled, so that means I donate my portion of school tax in my property taxes as well. Your Turn !!!

If you read my post correctly, I said "originally" went out to football booster club and I don't care that you home school your children, which you seem to have to mention in every post..Good bye!

Thank-you Pat.
Then you can undertand that I'm on the side of the residents and homeowners that don't have students in our schools. Those, the people who have to tolerate the immaturity of our youth. Those that have no responsibilty or dont understand what it is to be accountable for their own actions. You know, the ones that constantly rely on everybody else, because they have no idea how to do it themselves.
Those that laugh at punishment, failure, and the errors of other's. Those that think it's all one big joke, and those that don't know when to call for unity, to combine all of the available resourses for the common good of the entire community.
Right now, our community is suffering from a devastating loss and suffering of 3 children, and "those" will depend on a call to arms by a football booster club.
Yet, not long ago, a melee breaks out on some side street after a party, and "those" turned to every local, county and state enforcement agency in the New Jersey. Never giving any thought about the people who live here and defend the good on all issues, not only the ones that "those" think is a personal priority.
This issue at Wayne Valley should be receiving the attention Wayne Hills is receiving, and the students in Wayne all have the power to do it, but I dont think they have the instinctive knowledge to take on such a responsibility.
It's time for them to band together and prove me wrong.
