Documentary Chronicles Quarterback Kevin Olsen's Recruiting Journey
Two-part documentary is MSG Varsity's first. Olsen, his father Chris, mother Sue, and brother Greg, all appear in the film.
A quarterback, his family, and perhaps the biggest decision of his life are the subject of MSG Varsity’s first documentary “New Jersey’s Last Patriot.”
The two-part film revolves around nationally-ranked quarterback Kevin Olsen. The documentary chronicles Olsen’s recruitment by several Division I universities throughout the past year and his decision on which one to attend after he graduates from Wayne Hills High School in 2013.
MSG Varsity’s Steve Levy traveled the country with Olsen as he visited some of the country’s top football schools, including Auburn University, the University of Miami, and the University of South Carolina.
Cameras documented Olsen making his recent verbal commitment to attend the University of Miami. His brother Greg, a tight end for the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, also attended the university.
Olsen, his father Chris, brother Greg, and mother Sue all appear in the documentary.
Olsen and his father Chris did not respond to requests for comment.
The film also highlights the history of the Olsen family’s football legacy.
Olsen has won multiple state championships. His father has coached teams in 15 of the last 18 state group championship games, winning eight of them.
The documentary also shows the controversy surrounding the Patriots’ state-championship winning season last year. Olsen threw for 20 touchowns last season, including the winning score in the championship game.
Nine players were suspended from the sectional championship game last December. They were charged with aggravated assault for allegedly attacking two Wayne Valley High School students after a party in October.
Chris Olsen was criticized for not suspending the players from any of the team’s playoff games. The Board of Education suspended the players from all extracurricular activities. The Board of Education eventually eliminated the position of athletic director at Wayne Hills, a position Olsen held along with being the football coach. He will coach the team next year and retire at the end of the school year.
MSG Varsity’s Michael Quick narrates the documentary.
Part one of the documentary will debut on MSG Varsity on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 9 p.m.; part two will premier in December.
Viewers can watch exclusive vignettes of the film at a new Web site MSG Varsity created in advance of the premier.
