Councilwoman Not Resigning Despite Home Being For Sale

Council President Nadine Bello represents the 6th Ward.

Despite putting her home up for sale, Councilwoman Nadine Bello isn’t going anywhere.

Bello’s home, a five-bedroom Colonial, is up for sale. But despite what some people have said is a sign she would resign, Bello said she has no intention of stepping down.

“It’s a personal thing,” said Bello, a Republican who represents the 6th Ward. “It has nothing to do with me being on the council. We’re a small family, and we’re downsizing. We just felt that the time is right.”

Bello is a certified environmental inspector and works for New Wave Consultants. She consults to individuals in the environmental and educational fields regarding various environmental compliance regulations.

“We’re a New Jersey business, and we’re planning on staying [here],” Bello said.

Bello was first elected to the council in 2009 and re-elected in 2012.

Bello was elected president of the municipal council for 2013. She thanked her colleagues for their support and said she will “work hard to represent all of the residents of Wayne.”

Bello’s husband Jerry resigned from the Wayne Environmental Commission in 2011. Resident Bill Brennan said Jerry Bello held the office illegally and should not have been allowed to serve on the commission because he was convicted of official misconduct in 1994.

Some residents asked for Bello to resign after her husband stepped down.

Democratic Municipal Chairman Ray Egatz said that “given the propensity of the GOP having people resign after elections when they can appoint someone, I am preparing to have a 6th Ward council candidate ready should Bello resign after the primary,” Egatz said.

The primary will be held in June.

A change in the township charter would be a more apropos way of dealing with the problem of historic serial resignations and appointments and politcal patronage.

If there comes a time when a council person resigns or is unable to complete their term for what ever reason, a special election should be triggered instead.

In this way the council, or any future council, would free itself of the appearance of impropriety, and thus the vox populli will prevail.

It looks like the Republicans have sold their soul AGAIN. Will the new Pope be able to provide adequate dispensation? Oops, I forgot the name of the Republican Councilman who made the Sign of the Cross just prior to a hearing involving a Muslim school.

Does anyone know if she is moving to a different part of town, or leaving town altogether? While there is history in town, I'd hate for her to be guilty before proven innocent.

Dan - I realize this is a hyper-local site, but posting details about a person's home really is over the line. It borders on paparazzi behavior. Aside from whatever anyone thinks of her politics, this is a local politician working for free representing her community. That does not make her a public person. It makes what she does in her official capacity public, but showing her home address and listing is beyond the scope of what a responsible news outlet ought to be doing. The political issue of potential resignation is certainly fair game, but for now, she's an elected official who still lives in Wayne. News printed about the sale of her home could affect the offer price from a buyer who has access to her plans/motivation for selling. Be a mensch and just stick to the issues.

That seems to be the norm in the town. Throw her to the dogs before she even sells her house. As long as she moves into another house in the 6th ward, there should be NOSE problem with her staying on the council. Now put the dogs back in their cages.

WW. Actually they are paid positions with pension.
Public Information. some are paid 10,000 as opposed to 9,000.

Here is a cut and paste of 2 of our council:
PURCELL, ALAN, 2 lookup WAYNE TOWNSHIP $9,000 $9,000

A house that is listed for sale through a broker automatically becomes public information.

Jack Q, I understand your position. I don't think that Ms. Bello has been arrested for anything; therefore I am having difficulty with your analogy.
It is my belief that the party bosses are pulling the strings, not necessarily Ms. Bello.

Business as usual. They already have her replacement.
In Wayne just about every council member, including the mayor, have been appointed to their positions using this same method. It goes something like this: We know you are leaving, please wait till after the primary in June to resign, than we can appoint whomever we want. This political tactic is a control mechanism used way too often in Wayne NJ. This move gives them control of the party line without ever having a primary challenge.

This is not choice. It's psychological manipulation
The definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychological_manipulation

Psychological manipulation is a type of social influence that aims to change the perception or behavior of others through underhanded, deceptive, or even abusive tactics. By advancing the interests of the manipulator, often at the other's expense, such methods could be considered exploitative, abusive, devious, and deceptive.

Actually, the Rolling Stones hit is "Sympathy For The Devil". Here are the lyrics:
"Please allow me to introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
I've been around for a long, long years
Stole many a man's soul and faith

And I was 'round when Jesus Christ
Had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate
Washed his hands and sealed his fate

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game

I stuck around St. Petersburg
When I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the czar and his ministers
Anastasia screamed in vain

I rode a tank
Held a general's rank
When the Blitzkrieg raged
And the bodies stank

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guess my name, oh yeah
Ah, what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah..."

..."I watched with glee
While your kings and queens
Fought for ten decades
For the gods they made

I shouted out,
"Who killed the Kennedys?"
When after all
It was you and me

Let me please introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste
And I laid traps for troubadours
Who get killed before they reached Bombay

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah
But what's confusing you
Is just the nature of my game

Just as every cop is a criminal
And all the sinners saints
As heads is tails
Just call me Lucifer
'Cause I'm in need of some restraint

So if you meet me
Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, um yeah

Pleased to meet you
Hope you guessed my name, um yeah
But what's puzzling you
Is the nature of my game, um mean it, get down

Woo, who
Oh yeah, get on down
Oh yeah
Oh yeah!

Tell me baby, what's my name
Tell me honey, can ya guess my name
Tell me baby, what's my name
I tell you one time, you're to blame

Oh, who
woo, woo
Woo, who
Woo, woo
Woo, who, who
Woo, who, who
Oh, yeah

What's my name
Tell me, baby, what's my name
Tell me, sweetie, what's my name"..

I don't know Nadine Bello. I have met her very briefly on one or two occasions, and found her to be very personable and engaging. She clearly has not done anything illegal......she still lives in her home in Wayne, within the Ward or District she was elected in. What may or may not be happening here is something which goes on all over. It's a political chess game. Does she have knowledge of her intent? I'm sure she does and only time will tell what that is. We can criticize her all we want. To the victor go the spoils. When one party has the political control that the WRRO does, they can do whatever they want. They control everything here in town, not only the Town Council , but the BOE as well. By virtue of their control of the Town Council, they pick and select whoever they want to serve on the various Boards, such as the Planning Board, Board of Adjustment, Environmental Commission, Library Board, etc., etc., giving them even greater power and control over everything that goes on here in Town. Politically, they are in an enviable position. Unfortunately, that's the way it is here in town and will not change until change is made at the governing level. Too much power and control is not healthy. Where is the checks and balances system.? What this WRRO needs is a wake up call where somebody beats them at the polls. Will that happen anytime soon. I certainly hope so.

Holding elected public office anywhere is certainly admirable. However, in Wayne it becomes "appointed" office. OK, I know, I know, these appointees were eventually elected. I just couldn't resist.

It has the benefit of a temporary job without the pension and other percs. Once in you have a greater chance of becoming permanent. It has an unfair advantage to the other applicants. A simple phone call to the health insurer may answer the benefit question.

Noting that quite a few council are self employed, it may be worth the call, considering health insurance for family coverage on the open market can exceed 24,000 a year with a basic plan.
