Bus Advertising Could Generate $125K for District This Year
Move being made to offset fuel costs for 82-bus fleet.
The Wayne Public School District is projected to take in approximately $125,000 this year due to a new initiative that allows for advertisements to be placed on school buses.
The district has entered into an agreeement with the Educational Information and Resource Center (ERIC). ERIC will work on having advertising placed on each of the district's 82 school buses, Superintendent Ray Gonzalez said.
"Depending on the number of buses, the number of advertisements, ad size and other specifics, the revenue could range from $450 to $2,000 per bus, per year," Gonzalez said.
The district could earn $125,000 from the initative this year.
The advertisements are banners that are placed on the bottom part of the buses.
Gonzalez said the district made the move to offset fuel costs and help implement new "programs, services, or staff" in the district, Gonzalez said.
ERIC is responsible for repairing and replacing the banners should they get damanged.
"There is no out of pocket cost or no additional cost to the district," Gonzalez said.

They have lost their minds! The motorists near school buses should be paying attention to children going to and exiting buses. NOT reading ads on the buses themselves. Shame on anyone who voted yes for this driver distraction and anyone who recommended it.

I think Wayne could raise money by allowing students to purchase a placement on buses. Many of the students assigned to the bus routes don't even use the bus. My family misses the bus by 2 blocks. There is no way I would let my child walk 2.35 miles to high school in the winter darkness on main streets, but that is what Wayne expects. I believe there are many other parents who would also pay a fee to have their kids bused, but this has never been passed in Wayne. I don't know why.

Why don't you call the business administrator and ask?

Wayne Mom, why your on the phone with the business administrator, ask them according to my math that if each bus has a sign fee of a flat $2,000, What are they going to do with the $164,000 they make off the signs ? Hope they don't hire another administrator for the schools ?

Actually, NOSE, if you pay attention, you would NOSE that half of the profits must go to paying for fuel costs. So, while WayneMom is on the phone getting clarification of her issue, why don't you call (you will likely be put on hold, because the BA will be talking to WayneMom) and ask the BA what they intend to do with the remainder of the money.

It's been a couple months, maybe it's time again to remodel the board offices again with that money ? Who NOSE what is planned for the "other half" of the money ? Keep an eye out for construction crews again.

I would think that every bus has specifically assigned students to that bus. Is every bus completely filled to those assignments? I would certainly hope so. If not and there are a few seats open, would it be plausible to "sell" those seats? Are there regulatory issues that would get in the way? I'm sure the Board and Administration have thought of this before..However, it is an interesting question. In regards to the advertising matter, I personally think it's a great idea. I know someone posted about a safety issue here, but I still think it's a good business move to generate some nice revenue.

If you want revenue sell banner space at the football field at least there is no safety concern there. As for regulatory issues, there are; if they sell seats for some kids they have to give a free seat to everyone who gets a free or reduced priced lunch!

Garyp.....I believe they already do that. It's been at least a year or two since I've been to a high school football game at Hills, but I do recall seeing signs on the fence. Are there ways to enhance that revenue? Have they ever tried selling off naming rights to the field? Do high schools do that? Would anybody be interested? How about some verbal advertising by the people who call the game or putting out a sound bite to the crowd! Could they sell that? Are we allowed to do that? I think the necessity to get creatives is there to help generate more revenue.

Chicken, where does it say "pay for half" ? I see "offset fuel costs and implement new programs, services or staff" I putting my money on more staff. Don't be "pecking" up stories now.

NOSE
According to newspaper articles and the superintendent, the regulations require that 1/2 of the profits go to fuel costs for the buses.

What is printed in the paper and what they do with the money is two different things. It's called "changing a line item".

I had heard that Nike offered to pay for turf fields for both highschools and new scoreboards with only the stipulation that they were allowed to put their swoosh on the field and scoreboard...it was turned down by the board.

John, why would you want something for free when you have us good hearted people paying through the NOSE for it ?

See this is the problem. They come up with an idea to generate revenue then Superintendant Gonzalez states the money can be used to impliment new programs, services or staff. Instead of using the money towards the budget they just find ways to spend more. The solar panels are saving money on utilitiy bills but instead of passing the savings to the taxpayers, they just spend it. This is the fundamental problem in Wayne, "They can't stop spending". Enough is enough the taxpayers have had it with the BOE.

The BOE (BUY OVERLY EXCESSIVE) is like a hungry school of fish, they are on a feeding frenzy right now.Feeding off our hard earned money.

There should be a full investigation of all fiances and spending done by the BOE by an independant auditor or the State Attorney Generals office. The amount of money they spend each year and the continued hiring of people in administrative positions needs to be looked into. The taxpayers should demand this. There is just too much taxpayers money being spent without oversight.
