School Board To Appoint Two Principals
Moves are the latest in a series of decisions regarding administrative positions in the district. Maureen Weir will help lead Wayne Hills High School. Susan Wardell will be the new person in charge of Ryerson Elementary School.
The Board of Education is expected to appoint two new principals at a meeting on Wednesday.
Maureen Weir will be the new principal of Wayne Hills High School. Weir is curently a vice principal at Hills. She will earn slightly more than $152,300 annually.
Weir will replace Scot Beckerman. Beckerman resigned form the position ealrier this year only three years after taking the job.
Susan Wardell will be the new principal of Ryerson Elementary School. She is currently the assistant principal of George Washington Middle School.
Wardell’s annual salary will be about $120,000. She is replacing Frank Markowick.
Daniel Kilday, the former athletic director of Wayne Valley High School, will be the district’s new supervisor of health and physical education.
The moves are the latest in a series of personnel decisions that have occurred in recent weeks. They are part of a restructuring and re-evaluation of administrative positions and personnel throughout the district.
The board hired Michael Miello to be the district director of athletics earlier this month. The board created the new position as part of the restructuring initiative.
Jack Leonard and Toni Schito Ferry are the new principals of George Washington Middle School and Lafayette Elementary School, respectively.
George Washington Principal Mary Jane Tierney will retire July 31 after working 40 years in the district. Lafayette Principal Stella Cosmas is also retiring.
Marysol Berrios was hired to be the district’s assistant superintendent in January.

Well there seems to be a lot of restructuring going on. Much needed after so many years without a Super. Very happy to see that the Super is promoting internal people as well as hiring outside as there needs to be a balance. Too bad this article did not mention another recent internal promotion. Mr. Markowich was promoted from Ryerson to Schuyler (yet the article references a hire from January???). Nice to see all the promotions.

If memory is correct Markowich was the Director of the High Schools 2 yrs ago. That position was eliminated. Markowich had tenure in the district so the board had to find a position for him. Thus the principal at Ryerson was let go making room for Markowich that spot. Wouldn't exactly call this a promotion. Just another move. Ryerson has now had 3 different principals in the last 4-5 yrs. This will it their 4th! Seems like Ryerson keeps getting the short end of the stick!

Good job BOE on making sure current staff has opportunities. We need to provide additional training to the teachers so they can be ready to take on the higher level jobs when they open up. Glad to see this is happening.

Mrs Wardell is a fantastic educator and vice principal. I'm sure she will do a wonderful job at Ryerson. She will be very much missed at GW. The kids at Ryerson are very lucky.

They realized the backlash is coming and finally made some good decisions! Only one question. If Kilday and Olsen are still getting paid and we hire new AD at even a higher Salary, and two site supervisors are being hired, how is this saving us money?

What backlash? The superintendent has been here for 6 months. Give the guy a chance. Looks like he is doing a good job. No need to "fight".

Al, maybe the last principal could have kept his job if he had more control of the school. Teachers get caught leaving school during hours to go to Trader Joes, bringing kids to school and having another teacher watch them.

I don't know about those things, but I believe Al is wrong about 5 principals in 4 years, I recall that before Mr. Mitchell, there was Mr. Mobilio for a fairly brief stint. Before Mr. Mobilio, there was Mrs. Sherwood, and she was there for a pretty good length of time . Am I forgetting someone?
Also, Mrs. Sherwood retired (her right to do so), and Mr. Mobilio left for a higher paying private sector job (also his right to do so). For whatever reason, Mr. Mitchell did not work out.
Al's statement implies that there is something disfunctional going on at Schuyler, I think it is more likely that Mrs. Sherwood retired because she was ready, Or maybe she retired earlier than she would have (like a number of other district employees) to avoid a Governor Christie-imposed hit to her pension or health insurance contriibutions Mobilio may have been similarly motivated to bolt, and sought greener pastures.

Chicken Little......My comment simply stated that over the last 5 years, starting with this coming September, there have been 4 Principals. If you'd like to refute that, you're more than welcome . Mrs. Sherwood was there for about 12 years or so and retired in 2009. Frank Mobilio was Principal from Sept. 2009 to Dec. 2010. Bob Mitchell was Principal, both acting and permanent from Jan. 2011 to June 2012. Now we have Mr Markowicz. (sp) starting now! Nowhere in my statement did I indicate dysfunctionality at Schuyler. There is no dyisfunctionality at Schuyler. They are a high performing school with a very dedicated staff. That is your insecurity bringing that to light. Howevever, I do feel that our BOE trustees are a dysfunctional group. Very political in nature.Need to vote them out over the next three years.

Chicken Little......Read carefully. I did say 4 Principals, not 5 as you stated. By the way, you spelled dysfunctional incorrectly!

It is somewhat disheartening to see that our BOE trustees are going to renew the contract for the public relations firm. They are renewing it for one year at a cost of $30,000. Not sure where the educational value for our children is here. In my opinion, there is none!

You are correct; you did say 4 principals in 5 years. But, still, my comment stands.
Thank you for correcting my spelling error. But, still, my comment stands. (I restrain myself from correcting spelling errors in your postings; pointing out typos on this blog site is more petty than sincerely helpful.).

Why do you label me as insecure because of my response to your original comment? Where did THAT come from?!
It is obvious that the point of your initial posting was to charge that there is something dysfuctional about the district. Why else would you have posted as you did? You have now clarified that you view the BOE, not the school, as dysfunctional. But, you did not dispute my recollection of the history of the principals at Schuyler. It seems that your basis for criticizing the situation at Schuyler is solely that the Superintendent did not recommend renewing Mr. Mitchell as the principal. It is quite a stretch to indict the board for the several changes in principals at the school during the past few years. (But, for you, it doesn't take much stretching).
Al, I am not a great lover of the BOE, but I love, even less, your constant abject negativity. Your initial post was really feeble and lame, and somewhat pathetic.

Chicken Little.....now you're getting personal. If you don't like my posts....don't read them! I could care less about who likes or dislikes my posts. If you want to live in this town with a lampshade on your head, be my guest. Honestly, I don't think you have the guts to criticize the BOE. I suggest you go to the next meeting, hold hands with the board members and sing Kumbayah! If stating a true fact is pathetic, your insecure nature should possibly read the funnies vs. this blog! You mistake my "abject negativity" for criticism. I don't indict the Board for a change in Principals, I have too many other things to indict them on!!

Actually, i believe your response demonstrates your insecure nature.
What purpose could you possiblly have had by offering the shining light of your fact (four principals in five years), other than to cast aspersion on the board?
You can't help yourself. The article was a "feel good" story, about the hiring of two good people as new principals at Hills and Ryerson. All of the comments recognized this good news, until Kitty Kat's comment right before you chimed in. Guess you were waiting for someone with a similarly pissy outlook before weighing in with your very helpful and insightful fact.
I don't waste my time denegrating the board on a blog. When I have an issue, I contact the superintendent, and the some or all of the board members. But you crap all over the board on this website, every chance you get. You can call what you do "criticism," but I think my label is more accurate.
(And, since you are in the mood to correct my spelling, let me return the favor and correct your grammar. I believe what you actually meant to say is that I mistake your criticism for abject negativity. But that would be petty of me to do that, wouldn't it?)
