Cadet Receives Congressional Gold Medal For Volunteer Work

Congressional Gold Medal recipient Austin Belarian completed a nearly 750-hour long public service project, a Veterans Recognition Program. The program seeks to preserve veterans' stories for future generations to learn about 20th century wars. Belarian, a Civil Air Patrol Cadet, collected stories from New Jersey and six surrounding states about the most famous wars in history for his recognition project.

Spanish Instructor Named Teacher Of The Year

Stacey Gotesman is honored by the New Jersey Center for Tourette Syndrome and Associated Disorders. Gottesman, teaches Spanish at DePaul Catholic High School. One of her students nominated her for the award.

'Dedicated' Doc Will Still Make House Calls

James Lampariello, who practices family medicine on Alps Road, receives award from St. Joseph's for the way he treats his patients.

Lampariello, a lifelong Wayne resident, practices medicine at Alps Family Physicians and he is a staff member at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center. He has also been a volunteer firefighter with Company No. 4 for 21 years.

First-Time Author Writing Books To Help Children

Paula Giordano's first book "The Honeybees: Going to a New School" wants to use profits from children's series to open a roving soup kitchen.

“A lot of children are in that situation. They’re afraid to go to a new school. They’re afraid for some situation or if they’re alone,” Giordano said. “In the book, I talk about David and Goliath and how David wasn’t afraid to fight Goliath because he knew God was with him.”

CASA Offering New Online Course For Potential Advocates

The Passaic County Court Appointed Special Advocates will begin its first ever flex training class in September. The new online class will allow people to take the 30 hours of classroom training online rather than in a classroom.

The new flex training will allow potential advocates to spend half the time completing work through online learning and half the time in a classroom.

Judge Increases Alleged Burglar's Bail

A state judge increased bail Tuesday for Ronald Catti, the man suspected in a rash of burglaries in Wayne, NorthJersey.com reported.

Ronald Catti’s bail was initially set at $150,000 out of Wayne and $75,000 out of Lincoln Park, but state Judge Raymond Reddin increased the bail to $200,000 in both instances for a total of $400,000.

School District's Outdoor Environmental Program To Continue

The school district’s outdoor environmental program for elementary students will continue next year thanks to a new partnership with the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission (NJMC).

The program is designed to deepen and broaden experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by using the natural environment as the unifying theme across all subjects. First through fourth graders participate in the program.

Cops: Wayne Man Attacked Gas Station Employees

A Wayne man was charged with aggravated assault after allegedly using a 10-inch wooden rod attached to a bathroom key to assault three gas station employees in South Jersey on Wednesday, police said.

Salvatore Giordano, 29, of Elmwood Park, and Salvatore Vernacchio, 31, of Wayne, were drinking prior to a fight at the Getty gas station at Allenwood and Route 34 in Wall Township and began arguing with the gas station employees about using the bathroom, police said.

Break-In at Creative Kitchen & Bath

At 11:48 a.m. on July 4, Pete Albanese's neighbor called the Wayne Police Department to report a burglary at his business, Creative Kitchen & Bath on Hamburg Tpke, Public Information Officer James Clark said.

Albanese reported between $20,000 - $25,000 damages and goods stolen from his business, including broken front and back doors, damaged filing cabinets, and missing products.

Clark said the police have no leads on the burglar at this time.
