3 Schools will Have Make Up Day Feb. 19
Pines Lake, Theunis Dey, and George Washington will be in session to make up for an extra day they were closed following Superstorm Sandy.
Pines Lake and Theunis Dey elementary schools and George Washington Middle School will be in session on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
The schools were scheduled to be closed for winter recess but will be open to make up an extra day they were closed for after Superstorm Sandy.
District officials sought imput from parents on what day the schools should be open. Good Friday, March 29, was one of the days parents had the option of recommending. Some parents took offense to the idea of ever having school on one of the high Christian holy days.
Superintendent Ray Gonzalez said all schools in the district will be closed on Good Friday.
The Board of Education approved the change at a meeting Thursday night.

I am Christian - I am Catholic and I think it's crazy that the Board honors so many religious and political holidays that the kids are in school until June 26th. The Wayne population is becoming so diverse that I think it would be better for there to be school on many of those days and the kids who honor those days can stay home as an "excused absence". Growing up in Wayne, I remember that we were never off for the Jewish holidays but the Jewish kids were excused from school. That's the way it should be for Good Friday, Martin Luther King day, etc. It's ridiculous that the school calendar has school extending so far into almost July! AND that's with only building in 2 snow days as opposed to building in 4 snow days as has been historically done.
